Chocolate Chip Dinosaur Dig Cookies

An Archeological Adventure in Your Kitchen!
Get your little explorers ready for a delicious dig! These cookies are not just a treat; they're an activity. Kids will love the hands-on fun of mixing the 'dirt' dough and then carefully 'excavating' the chocolate fossils hidden inside. It's a simple recipe that turns an afternoon of baking into a prehistoric adventure they can eat.
Materials
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups mixed chocolate 'fossils' (chocolate chunks, mini chocolate chips, and regular chocolate chips)
Preparation
- First, let's prepare our dig site! In a large bowl, use an electric mixer (with adult help) or a strong wooden spoon to cream the softened butter and both sugars together until the mixture is light and fluffy, like soft sand.
- Next, we'll add our binding agents. Crack the eggs into a small bowl first (to avoid shells!) and then add them one at a time to the sugar mixture, beating well after each one. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Now for the dry earth. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Don't overmix, or the 'earth' will get too tough!
- Time for the best part - burying the fossils! Gently fold in your variety of chocolate chunks and chips. The different sizes will make the excavation even more exciting.
Cooking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). This is a job for a grown-up! Line your baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent our precious discoveries from sticking.
- Now, form your mounds of earth. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough about 2 inches apart onto the prepared baking sheets. These little mounds are where the dinosaurs are hiding!
- Bake for 10-12 minutes. You'll know they're ready when the edges are golden brown but the centers still look a little soft. The smell of melting chocolate will fill your kitchen cave!
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. This is important as it allows them to set properly, so the fossils don't escape.
