Your Emergency Chocolate Fix
We all have those moments—a sudden, intense craving for something warm, chocolatey, and deeply satisfying. This recipe is your secret weapon. In less time than it takes to preheat an oven, you can whip up a rich, fudgy chocolate cake with a gooey, lava-like center, all in your favorite mug. It’s a warm hug in a cup, ready whenever you need it.
Materials
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 packet of hot chocolate mix (optional, for extra flavor)
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large chocolate truffle or 2 squares of good-quality dark chocolate
Preparation
- First, grab your favorite microwave-safe mug. A standard 12-ounce mug is perfect. We're going to mix everything right in there, so say goodbye to extra dishes!
- Add all the dry ingredients directly into the mug: the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and the hot chocolate mix if you're using it. Give it a good stir with a fork to break up any lumps and make sure everything is evenly combined. This is the foundation of your delicious cake.
- Now, pour in the wet ingredients: the milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Stir everything together until you have a smooth, thick batter. Make sure to scrape the bottom of the mug to get any hidden pockets of dry mix.
- Here comes the magic! Gently press the chocolate truffle or chocolate squares into the center of the batter until they are just covered. This is what will create that incredible molten lava center when it cooks.
Cooking
- Place a paper towel on your microwave's turntable and set the mug on top. This will catch any potential (but unlikely) overflow.
- Microwave on high for 60 to 70 seconds. The cake will puff up significantly, and the edges should look set, but the center will still be slightly wet. The exact time can vary depending on your microwave's wattage, so it's better to undercook it slightly the first time you make it.
- Let the cake rest in the microwave for a minute after cooking. It's going to be lava-hot! This also allows it to finish cooking from the residual heat.
- Carefully remove the mug from the microwave. Be cautious, as the handle might be hot.
