From Pixels to Plate: AI Food Photography You Can Cook

This week’s AI Food Art Friday prompt explores an unexpected but delicious fusion—Chocolate Bacon Avocado Toast. The savory crunch of crispy bacon, creamy avocado, and the rich depth of dark chocolate create a decadent contrast that challenges both taste buds and photography techniques.

The Prompt You Can Try Yourself:

“An avant-garde take on avocado toast, captured from an unconventional, almost overhead diagonal angle. The creamy avocado forms a lush base beneath a jagged, crispy bacon crown, while dark chocolate cascades unpredictably across the surface, blurring the lines between savory and sweet. Shot at f/2.8, the focus shifts dramatically to the texture of the avocado and the gloss of the chocolate, leaving the bacon to play with the light. Side lighting creates sharp contrasts, casting unexpected shadows that elongate and warp, turning this classic dish into an abstract composition of rich textures and unusual perspectives.“

For this challenge, we wanted to experiment with a fusion dish—play with textures, lighting, and composition to showcase its layers and contrasts. Focus on the glossy sheen of the chocolate, the crispy edges of the bacon, and the smooth creaminess of the avocado, and capture the interplay between these bold flavors in a visually stunning way. Whether you capture a close-up shot or a more staged plate, focus on how the textures pop and play with the light.

Recipe: Chocolate Bacon Avocado Toast (Chocolate + Bacon + Avocado)

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of sourdough bread
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 4 strips of crispy bacon
  • 2 oz dark chocolate (70% or higher)
  • 1 tsp olive oil (optional for drizzling)
  • Sea salt (optional for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Toast the Sourdough: Toast the slices of sourdough bread until golden and crispy.
  2. Prepare the Avocado: Mash the ripe avocado with a fork and spread it evenly over the toasted bread. Optionally drizzle with a small amount of olive oil for extra richness.
  3. Cook the Bacon: Fry the bacon until crispy, then chop it into small pieces.
  4. Melt the Chocolate: Melt the dark chocolate either using a double boiler or in the microwave in short bursts.
  5. Assemble the Toast: Top the mashed avocado with crispy bacon pieces. Drizzle the melted dark chocolate over the top.
  6. Garnish: Finish with a pinch of sea salt for added flavor contrast, if desired.

Enjoy your indulgent twist on avocado toast!

About our Winter 2025 Arts program

As part of our Food Art Fridays series, this challenge is not just about creating stunning food imagery—it’s about exploring the broader landscape of digital literacy, media arts and how generative AI tools are shaping the future of creativity. Engaging with AI to craft these images, artists develop a deeper understanding of AI-assisted design, digital media, and visual storytelling. This exploration fosters critical skills in creative problem-solving, prompt crafting, and mastering new technology, empowering artists to push the boundaries of their craft while enhancing their digital fluency. Through this process, we’re not only creating art but also learning to navigate the evolving intersection of technology and creativity. Our 2025 Winter and Fall program activities are supported by the OpenAI Researcher Access Program and the Manitoba Arts Council.
