The Arts Incubator

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The project is grounded in a dynamic process of collaborative engagement and capacity building, utilizing arts-based research methodologies to ensure the work is both relevant and empowering. A key focus is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), which positions young people as leaders in investigating their own economic realities and co-designing their futures. Through a series of co-design workshops, digital storytelling projects, and community forums, ECO-STAR North facilitates intergenerational knowledge transfer, connecting youth with Elders and established creators. This hands-on, community-led approach ensures the resulting toolkit is not an academic exercise, but a living, practical resource built by and for Northern innovators, strengthening a resilient and interconnected creative ecosystem.

Digital Arts and Climate Entrepreneurship for Rural and Northern Communities

In a world where climate change presents one of humanity’s most pressing challenges, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit towards sustainable solutions is more important than ever. “The Eco-Innovators Journey” is a unique, interactive text-adventure game designed to do just that. It invites players to step into the shoes of an aspiring climate entrepreneur, navigating a series of choices and challenges to develop a tangible project idea aimed at making a positive environmental impact. But it’s not really a game; it’s a creative sandbox for exploring how innovative thinking can address real-world ecological issues.

Developed as a community project during this year’s summer digital arts and entrepreneurship programming, each experimental AI-powered tool serves as a basic prototype focused on learning how to conceptualize and develop practical resources. Each weekend, the team spends a few hours conceptualizing and creating a simple app or tool with basic functionality.

In this example, the goal was to support artists and programs in small, rural, and northern communities by providing accessible guidance on fundamental methodologies and approaches like CO-STAR. In advancing this understanding, the tool (and the process of creating it) is about empowering local creative initiatives to build sustainable, community-rooted arts and entrepreneurship practices.

Using AI Tools and Storytelling to Inspire Eco-Friendly Entrepreneurship

The core of “The Eco-Innovators Journey” is powered by Google’s Gemini API, creating a dynamic and responsive narrative experience. Players begin by selecting a broad area of climate concern, such as plastic pollution, sustainable energy, or food systems. From there, the game unfolds through a series of scenarios where each decision made by the player shapes their unique path. The AI helps generate contextual options, offer insights on entrepreneurial principles, and guide the player through the iterative process of problem identification, solution ideation, resource planning, and impact definition.

As users progress, they’re not just passively consuming a story; they are actively building the foundation of a climate project. Each choice contributes to their “The Eco-Innovators Journey,” a simple framework that captures the key elements of their burgeoning idea.

The prototype encourages critical thinking:

  • What is the root cause of the problem?
  • What innovative solution could address it?
  • What resources are needed?
  • What tangible impact will it create?

This structured yet flexible approach is intended to mirror the early stages of entrepreneurial venture development.

Build Your Climate Impact Project with The Eco-Innovators Journey Prototype

The end result of the “journey” is the presentation of a personalized “Eco-Innovator’s Canvas.” This summary encapsulates the player’s choices and the AI-generated insights, providing a basic project outline. While the game provides a simplified model, the aim is to demystify the process of climate entrepreneurship and spark genuine ideas. The final canvas, enriched with an AI-generated inspiring narrative, serves as a testament to the player’s creative problem-solving and a potential launchpad for further exploration or even real-world action.

“The Eco-Innovators Journey” ultimately seeks to empower individuals by making the complex world of climate solutions more accessible and engaging. By combining interactive storytelling with the power of AI, it aims to inspire a new generation of thinkers and doers, demonstrating that anyone can contribute to a more sustainable future. It’s an invitation to explore, to innovate, and to imagine the positive change we can collectively achieve.
