Delicate dill plants are thriving in the Living Lab's community garden, a returning favorite from last year's pilot program.

From Pilot Discovery to Cherished Addition in Our Community Garden

This year, a familiar and much-anticipated aroma is rising from our community garden beds: dill! We were first introduced to this wonderful herb last year, as part of our pilot program, generously supported by Manitoba Agriculture and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. For many of us, it was the very first time we’d seen or even tasted dill directly from the plant. The flavor was such a surprise – like that familiar potato chip seasoning, but fresh and vibrant! Now, we’ve happily added more to our community grow beds, and we’re truly excited to taste it again.

But this year’s dill at the Living Lab is more than just a delicious addition to our sustainable agriculture efforts. For us, it’s a living memory of all the good experiences from last year’s pilot program. Each feathery green frond reminds us of the connections made, the knowledge shared, and the sheer joy of hands-on learning. It represents a deeper thread in our storytelling project, a plant that instantly brings back a sense of discovery and collaboration. It’s a plant we truly hope to continue cultivating for years to come, embedding it firmly into the fabric of our outdoor spaces.

As the dill grows, its delicate, feathery foliage is a beautiful sight, offering another unique element for plant documentation through our artistic programming. Its slender stalks and tiny, emerging flower heads provide another interesting subject for those engaging in photography workshops or simply observing the intricate beauty of nature. This garden expansion with plants like dill enhances our nature connection and expands our urban farming practices.

The dill embodies how our Living Lab works – combining practical sustainable agriculture with rich experiences. It underscores how every plant we grow contributes to a larger narrative about environmental education, traditional knowledge, and the simple pleasure of cultivating our own food. The excitement around this year’s dill harvest is palpable, building on past successes and looking forward to many more flavorful seasons.

The Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project (MINIAP) is a community-driven research and policy initiative examining the environmental, social, cultural, economic, and long-term safety impacts of the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel in Melgund, Ontario. Aligned with the federal impact assessment process led by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and focused on the proposal advanced by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, this integrated project analyzes groundwater protection, nuclear waste storage safety, Indigenous rights and treaty interests, environmental monitoring, long-term radioactive waste containment, emergency preparedness, regulatory oversight, community health, regional economic impacts, and intergenerational stewardship. Designed to enhance public participation, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making, the Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project provides accessible analysis, technical review, and community engagement resources to support informed input into Canada’s nuclear waste management strategy and the federal impact assessment process.
