A Culinary Crossroads of Continents
Imagine the pillowy, golden-brown perfection of fry bread meeting the savory, cheesy goodness of a classic pizza. This Fry Bread Pizza recipe is a simple yet brilliant fusion that brings together Indigenous American tradition and beloved Italian cuisine. It's faster than making traditional dough and offers a unique texture that will have everyone asking for a second slice.
Materials
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water or milk
- 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
- Optional toppings: sliced bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives
Preparation
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually stir in the warm water or milk until a soft, sticky dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until smooth.
- Divide the dough into four equal pieces and shape each into a flat disc, about 6-8 inches in diameter.
Cooking
- In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place one dough disc into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed up.
- Remove the fry bread with tongs and let it drain on a wire rack or paper towels. Repeat with the remaining dough.
- Preheat your oven's broiler to high.
- Place the cooked fry breads on a baking sheet. Spread a layer of marinara sauce on each, followed by mozzarella cheese and your desired toppings.
- Place under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
