Materials
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water or milk
- Vegetable oil for frying (about 3-4 cups)
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips, melted
- 2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Preparation
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Gradually add the warm water or milk, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for at least 15 minutes.
- Divide the rested dough into 6 equal portions and gently flatten each into a 1/4-inch thick disc.
- Wash and prepare the mixed berries. If using large strawberries, slice them.
Cooking
- In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place one disc of dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown and puffed up.
- Using tongs, remove the fry bread from the oil and let it drain on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate.
- Repeat with the remaining dough portions.
