Francine (Fran) Higgins is a Dryden, Ontario–based crafter whose lifelong passion for sewing began in childhood, inspired by her mother’s skill and creativity. After receiving her own sewing machine upon graduating in 1977, she has continued to work with fabric as her primary creative outlet. While she has explored many crafts over the years, sewing remains her “happy place,” reflecting a deep connection to tradition, making, and everyday creativity.

The 2026 Spring Art Exhibition in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario, and Winnipeg, Manitoba brings together exceptional Northern Artists, including Dryden artist Tanya McArthur, in a dynamic Multi and Inter-Arts showcase presented through our Northern Arts Program. This year’s Spring Arts Exhibition at the Dyment Recreation Hall in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario proudly features the powerful work of local Borups Corners artist Leanne Nicholson. Rooted in the landscapes and traditions of Northwestern Ontario, Leanne’s striking mixed-media art—ranging from intricately painted skulls and antlers to expressive wildlife imagery—captures the spirit of the land in a way that is both raw and deeply moving. Her nature-inspired work blends visual arts and found natural materials, creating a unique artistic voice shaped by resilience, lived experience, and a deep connection to place. Celebrate Canada Day by showcasing your talents at the upcoming Dyment Community Craft Sale on July 1st! Held at the Dyment, Ontario Community Centre & Grounds from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, this vibrant community market is officially calling for local vendors, artisans, and creators to join the festivities. Organizers are currently seeking applications for a wide variety of booths, including handmade crafts, artisan goods, local produce, vintage & unique finds, and delicious eats. It is a fantastic opportunity for small businesses and hobbyists alike, offering both tables and tent spaces with no fee for tables. ART BORUPS CORNERS SOCIETY

Art Borups Corners is a non-profit arts incubator based in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario. We bring artists, youth, and local residents together through hands-on creative projects, workshops, and storytelling rooted in everyday life in the North. Our focus is on making space for people to try things, share skills, and build confidence through art that grows out of where they live.


We’re also a place for testing ideas and working across different ways of making — from land-based practice to digital work and everything in between. Much of what we do happens through partnerships and shared projects, connecting local creative work with wider conversations while keeping things grounded, practical, and community-led.
