Virtual Exhibition highlights Inuit perspective on climate change
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA — Inuit youth photographer Tony Eetak is using his lens to capture the changing Arctic landscape and the impact of climate change on his community in a new virtual exhibition.
Eetak’s work, supported by the Manitoba Arts Council Indigenous 360 program, showcases a unique perspective on the North, documenting the subtle and dramatic shifts in the environment.
“My photography is a reflection of the world I see, the world I’m growing up in,” Eetak said in a statement. “It’s a world of stark beauty, of vastness that can take your breath away, but it’s also a world that is changing.” He photographed many of the images over the last few months while visiting friends and family and enjoying life in his hometown, Arviat.
The exhibition features images of melting ice, shifting weather patterns, and the impact of these changes on Inuit communities. Eetak’s work also highlights the resilience and strength of the people who call this land home.
“This exhibition is a really important step for me, and it’s all thanks to the opportunities I’ve had with the Manitoba Arts Council Indigenous 360 program,” said Eetak. “They didn’t just teach us about taking pictures; we got to explore all sorts of ways to tell stories through art, from how to frame a shot to putting together a whole show. That hands-on experience, you know, really getting in there and doing it, has given me the confidence to share these images and talk about what’s happening in our homeland in a new way.”
The virtual exhibition aims to raise awareness about the effects of climate change in the Arctic and to share the stories of Inuit people who are living on the front lines of this crisis. Eetak hopes his photographs will spark a conversation and inspire action to protect this fragile environment.
