Short Stories Today: Dystopian Sci-Fi, Mystery, and Drama

Immerse yourself in dystopian sci-fi and mystery fragments where the final outcome remains an open question for the reader to answer.
Art Borups Corners July 21, 2025

Questions Without Answers

The future is rarely clear, and these stories reflect that uncertainty. Presented as incomplete narrative fragments, they offer visions of broken societies and unsolved crimes. They are pages torn from a larger book, providing just enough context to hook the reader before leaving them to navigate the implications on their own.

This initiative is an exploration of applied artificial intelligence research within the realm of interdisciplinary arts. It examines how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process, helping to build complex worlds and intricate plots. The goal is to push the boundaries of storytelling and scriptwriting through technological collaboration.

The focus here is on the speculative and the suspenseful, with Dystopian Sci-Fi and Mystery taking center stage. The author responsible for these bleak yet compelling visions is Jamie F. Bell. The scenarios are set, but the escape routes are undefined.

We encourage you to engage deeply with these scenarios. Do not simply consume the text; analyze the variables presented and construct the resolution that these dystopian worlds demand.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

Dedicated to the advancement of digital literacy, our project investigates the potential of AI-assisted narrative to transform the publishing industry through creative technology. These short stories plunge readers into high-stakes environments, ranging from cyberpunk dystopias and military sci-fi to the expansive scope of space opera. By fusing the tension of mystery and drama with the philosophical depth of literary dystopian fiction, we aim to showcase the future of speculative storytelling.

Two teenagers, Finnian and Sara, stand in a derelict underground metro station, illuminated by faint emergency lights, their faces etched with worry.

Conduit of Rust

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Cyberpunk Dystopia | Genre: Dystopian Sci-Fi

The city pressed in, a cold, indifferent mass of polished chrome and flickering light-screens. The perpetual hum of the data streams vibrated through the pavement, a low, invasive thrum that had become the ambient soundtrack to existence. Fifteen-year-old Finnian, a wisp of a boy with eyes too old for his face, moved through the crowded pedestrian lanes, his presence as unremarkable as the millions of others absorbed by their personal feeds, their faces aglow with the blue-white light of their pocket-terminals.

Three teenagers in a futuristic classroom, one male (Jett) looking apprehensive, another female (Linda) looking dejected, and a third male (Kaito) looking worried. A female professor stands before them. Outside a large window is a simulated autumn forest. The lighting is dim, emphasizing the tension.

A Gilded Cage of Creativity

Category: Space Opera | Genre: Dystopian

A sterile, futuristic classroom within a space station, where the outside world is an artificial autumn landscape. Teenagers are seated in a semicircle, facing a strict professor. The atmosphere is tense, as a discussion about ‘the arts’ becomes a veiled interrogation of individual thought and loyalty to the Authority.

Green Static

Category: Military Sci-Fi | Genre: Dystopian

A claustrophobic, vine-choked basement beneath a ruined cityscape where the laws of physics and biology feel slightly suspended due to the encroachment of ‘The Velvet’, a bio-weaponized flora.

A Ring of Frost on the Mantel

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Literary | Genre: Mystery

A tense conversation between a teenage boy and his aunt about a family secret surrounding a missing cousin from a long-ago Christmas, taking place in a neglected family home in spring. The teen begins his own investigation, discovering a small, unexpected clue.

The Unflattering Light of the A&E

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Dystopian | Genre: Drama

The clock on the wall of the Accident & Emergency waiting room had a dead battery. It was stuck at 2:43, which felt appropriate. Time had stopped for me, too. I was suspended in this beige room, under the hum of fluorescent lights that made everyone’s skin look grey and sickly. The air smelled of antiseptic and fear.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
