Crafting Visual Narratives from Land-Based Experiences
You know, sometimes the simplest moments from our summer out on the land are the ones that stick with you. This drawing, for instance, just takes me right back. We spent so much time just being present, absorbing everything, and of course, taking a ton of photos. Now, we’re taking those snapshots – like this one of a little explorer by the tent, with the vastness of the water behind them – and really working with them. This week has been all about diving into digital manipulation, playing with filters, and figuring out how to bring out the feeling of these moments in a new way. It’s a journey from observation to creation.
It’s been exciting to learn how digital brushstrokes can show the strength of a landscape. We also learned to look at pictures differently, and even just the simple joy of discovery. We’re not just editing our photos; we’re learning about re-telling our stories visually. From converting photo formats to layering textures, it’s like we’re learning to give each memory a fresh voice. The focus isn’t just on what was there, but what we felt there. It’s truly an artistic adventure in its own right, connecting our immediate experiences with the enduring power of visual arts.
It’s also a different way to enjoy the hundreds and hundreds of photos we’ve all taken this summer.
As the warmth of summer fades, we’re already buzzing about our Fall and Winter program with The Arts Incubator kicking off in October. We’ll be taking all these newfound skills and channeling them into creating our very own storybooks and publications. Imagine that – turning our summer memories into published works! We’ll continue meeting in-person and online every Wednesday and Saturday as we start to shift from the summer to fall and winter program. A huge shout-out to The Arts Incubator Winnipeg Hub, Art Borups Corners, the Ontario Arts Council Inter and Multi-Arts Projects program and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Creative Entrepreneurship program for their support; they made all these incredible learning opportunities possible for us.
