Minds in the Machine: Unfinished Complexities
Within this collection lie unfinished short stories, presented as precise, evocative glimpses into narratives that are perpetually in motion. These are not whole arcs but significant moments, much like finding a powerful scene from an unknown play. They invite readers to actively engage their imagination, constructing the events that led to these points and envisioning their ultimate conclusions.
This project serves as an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It explores how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process, shaping new forms of storytelling and scriptwriting, and enhancing digital literacy skills and workflows.
Today’s selection features a fascinating blend of genres, including the high-stakes world of Techno-Thriller, the intricate depths of Psychological Drama, the relatable observations of Slice of Life, the distinct narratives of Boys Love (BL), and the charming intrigue of Cozy Mystery. Jamie F. Bell, Eva Suluk, and Leaf Richards are among the authors contributing to this diverse set of unfinished works.
We invite you to explore these compelling segments, not merely as a reader, but as a co-creator. Your imagination is key to completing these tales, transforming them into rich, personal narrative experiences within your own mind.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

The Glacial Unveiling
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Magical Realism | Genre: Techno-Thriller
The old community hall smelled faintly of damp wool and stale coffee, a scent that clung to the worn linoleum and the plastic chairs arranged in a loose circle. Outside, the early winter night was already a profound, inky black, only occasionally broken by the distant, spectral shimmer of the northern lights, a constant reminder of how far north they truly were. Inside, the fluorescent lights hummed with a low, insistent buzz, casting a harsh, unyielding glow on the faces around the table, a stark contrast to the soft, shifting sky beyond the frost-rimmed windows.

The White Silence
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Psychological Drama | Genre: Psychological Drama
A remote cabin, buried deep in a snow-choked forest, becomes the stage for a solitary arrival. The air is thick with a preternatural quiet, hinting at forgotten events and the unsettling persistence of memory as winter’s chill begins to seep into the very walls.

The Breakup
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Young Adult Contemporary | Genre: Slice of Life
Late afternoon in early May, amidst the slush and grey ice of a Northwestern Ontario spring. Two friends sit on the back of a truck parked at a scenic lookout, debating the merits of leaving home versus the comfort of stagnation.

Sun-Bleached Silence
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Expository | Genre: Boys Love (BL)
Colton and Tommy are in the abandoned shell of an old general store in the sweltering summer heat, having a tense, emotionally charged conversation following a fight. The scene is set amidst dust, decay, and harsh sunlight, reflecting their bruised relationship.

A Custard Tart and a Missing Trinket
Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Mystery | Genre: Cozy Mystery
The aroma of cinnamon and stale coffee hung thick in ‘The Daily Grind,’ a small café nestled on the main street of Willowbrook Falls. Outside, the early spring sun, watery and pale, was just beginning to coax reluctant green from the dormant branches of maples lining the pavement. Inside, Agnes Winter, a woman whose spectacles often sat askew on her nose, was meticulously dissecting a custard tart with a tiny fork, her attention only partially on the pastry. Her friend, Betty Davids, across from her, was in full flow, detailing the latest local scandal.
Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation
AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting:Our research investigates AI’s role in creative development, using genres like Cozy Mystery and Slice of Life to explore how AI can craft intricate character relationships and gentle plot progressions. For Techno-Thriller, AI demonstrates potential in intricate world-building and high-stakes suspense, while in Boys Love (BL) and Psychological Drama, it aids in developing nuanced emotional arcs and building tension. This work explores AI’s ability to handle genre-specific challenges, from compelling dialogue to complex narrative structures, significantly enhancing storytelling and scriptwriting.
Talent Development and Training:The creation of these diverse chapters exemplifies the evolving skill sets necessary for creative professionals in digital publishing and film. Our studies highlight the importance of digital literacy and adeptly managing AI tools, not just for generating content, but for refining narrative structures and character development across genres. This work is critical for preparing artists for future production workflows, where human creativity is augmented by sophisticated technological assistance.
We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
