Stories Today: Noir Mystery Meets Sci-Fi

Explore unfinished tales from Jamie F. Bell blending noir mystery, horror, slice of life, domestic thriller, and sci-fi.
The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg 21 Dec 2025

Shadows, Futures, and Everyday Terrors

This collection presents a series of unfinished tales, each a carefully selected moment from a world rich with unspoken stories. These short stories invite readers to step into narratives mid-stream, offering glimpses into characters and conflicts that challenge the imagination to piece together past events and anticipate future outcomes.

The project stands as an experimental program, situated at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It aims to explore how digital tools can function as partners in the writing process, thereby shaping new forms of storytelling, scriptwriting, and improving digital literacy skills and workflows.

In this post, the collection spans the shadowy streets of Noir Mystery, the chilling dread of Horror, the intimate observations of Slice of Life, the tension of Domestic Thriller, and the speculative visions of Sci-Fi. Author Jamie F. Bell delivers these multifaceted unfinished stories.

Immerse yourself in these intriguing unfinished tales. Your role as a reader extends to that of a co-creator, as you fill the silences and envision the complete arcs of these compelling characters and situations.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A weary private investigator in a cheap suit examines a grainy photograph on a dimly lit bus at night.

A Nickel-Plated Souvenir

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Swashbuckling Romance | Genre: Noir Mystery

The bus smelled of wet wool and despair. Beaton stared at his own reflection in the grime-streaked window, a ghost of a man in a cheap suit, superimposed over a landscape of dead-looking trees and snow-dusted rock. He hadn’t slept in two days, and his thoughts felt like grinding gears. He was going over the case, the same way a tongue worries a sore tooth. It was a nasty piece of work, and the worst part was, he hadn’t solved a damn thing.

The Orange Peel Grimace

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Horror | Genre: Horror

The crisp bite of late autumn clung to everything, a preamble to winter’s harsher embrace. Fallen leaves, ochre and burnt umber, whispered across the deserted suburban street, disturbed only by the keen wind. A sense of wrongness, subtle yet profound, began to settle over the quiet afternoon, preceding the grotesque arrival.

Two young men, Elias and Orion, stand by a broken-down car and a pickup truck on a desolate, dusty road under a harsh summer sky.

A Grating Calculus

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Slice of Life

The asphalt, a dark, bruised ribbon, buckled under the relentless summer sun. Heat waves danced above its surface, distorting the already distant horizon into a liquid smear of ochre and dull green. A lone, aging sedan sat on the shoulder, its front driver-side wheel a deflated mockery of mobility, a flat, sad grin against the backdrop of a vast, indifferent sky. The air, thick with the scent of baked earth and exhaust residue, seemed to press down, stifling any impulse for swift action.

A Loom of Summer Heat and Doubt

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Minimalist | Genre: Domestic Thriller

The summer heat pressed down on the city, a thick, wet blanket even in the late afternoon. Winnipeg shimmered under it, the asphalt reflecting a greasy glare that made Sadie’s eyes ache. Up here, on the fourth floor of their Exchange District loft, the air stirred, barely, through the open window, carrying the faint, cloying smell of stagnant river water and diesel fumes. Heavy, slow motes of light-dusted air danced in the shafts of sun cutting through the grimy panes, like tiny, tired dancers. She watched a pigeon strut along the window ledge, its head bobbing with an unsettling confidence, before it launched itself into the hazy expanse of downtown brick and glass. Everything felt… sticky. Her skin, the air, the silence. This urban life. This art. This project.

An Aberration on a Wednesday

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Coming-of-Age | Genre: Sci-Fi

The cold doesn’t just bite; it holds on. It seeps through the seams of Norman’s worn parka, a persistent ache in his bones that feels older than his sixteen years. Downtown Winnipeg is a monochrome photograph of itself, all grey slush and greyer buildings, but the Christmas lights strung across Portage Avenue try to argue otherwise, their colours bleeding weakly onto the salt-stained pavement.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: Our team is investigating AI’s potential in creative development, using genres like Noir Mystery, Slice of Life, Horror, Domestic Thriller, and Sci-Fi as key case studies. We are studying how AI can tackle genre-specific challenges, from crafting complex plot twists and atmospheric dialogue in Noir Mystery, to exploring human relationships in Slice of Life, generating suspense in Domestic Thrillers, and envisioning futuristic worlds in Sci-Fi. This research aims to understand how AI can enhance the core processes of storytelling and scriptwriting, offering new tools for narrative construction and creative ideation across diverse forms.

Talent Development and Training: Our research further examines the evolving skill sets required for creative professionals in an AI-integrated landscape. The process of generating compelling chapters within these varied genres—from the intricate plotting of Noir Mystery to the expansive visions of Sci-Fi—serves as a practical exploration of future digital publishing and film production workflows. This work highlights the critical need for digital literacy and the strategic management of AI tools, empowering creators to adapt and thrive in an increasingly technologically driven creative industry.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.

The Potluck Principle

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg 4 Mar 2026
A low angle shot of freshly-plowed roads, where the glistening ice crystals catch the faint glow of streetlights on a dark winter night. The snow is pristine, untouched except for the tire tracks, and with each step, the snow crunches sharply under my boots, the cold air crisp and still. The quiet of the night envelops me, the only sound the soft crackle of ice beneath my feet.
