Journeys Into the Unseen and Unknown
Within this collection, readers will discover unfinished short stories, each a glimpse into a world paused, a moment frozen in time. These are not complete arcs but instead evocative segments, much like scattered pieces of a puzzle inviting assembly. They challenge the mind to construct beginnings and ends, encouraging a deeper, more imaginative engagement with the text.
This project represents an experimental program situated at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. Its purpose is to explore how digital tools can serve as a partner in the writing process, fostering new forms of storytelling and scriptwriting, and enhancing digital literacy skills and workflows.
This selection features a mix of genres, from the magic of Fantasy and the romance of human connection to the speculative landscapes of Sci-Fi, alongside the intrigue of Cozy Mystery and classic Mystery. Jamie F. Bell, Tony Eetak, and Eva Suluk are among the authors whose distinctive styles are showcased in these diverse offerings.
We encourage you to immerse yourself in these tales, allowing your mind to wander through their incomplete narratives. Imagine the full scope of these worlds, become a co-creator, and complete the stories within your own thoughts.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A Fraying Patchwork of Green
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Dystopian | Genre: Fantasy
The autumn air in MetroCentre Park was a manufactured crispness, piped in via carbon scrubbers that hummed faintly beneath the paving stones. Leaves, genetically engineered for optimal colour retention, clung to their branches in perfect gradients of ochre and russet. Drones, no larger than wasps, conducted silent particulate matter scans, their tiny lenses reflecting a sky that was, by official decree, ‘optimally azure’. Andrew, his shoulders hunched in a worn, recycled-fibre coat, tracked his official route along the designated ‘Mindful Meander’ path, the digital chime of his wrist-monitor a constant, low thrum against the manufactured serenity.

The Canvas of Winter
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Literary | Genre: Romance
Steven and Jane, two teenagers, are in Professor Sterling’s office on a cold winter day. They are engaged in a discussion about the profound impacts of art, transitioning from philosophical debate to the exciting proposition of a new community arts project.

The Cold Trace
Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Mystery | Genre: Sci-Fi
The station hummed, a low, mechanical thrum that was more a part of the cold than any sound. Outside, the blizzard howled, a ceaseless, predatory song against the reinforced walls. Inside, the air tasted of burning copper and stale coffee, a metallic tang that never quite left the tongue. This was the world of Station Cerberus, a frozen speck at the edge of the habitable zone, and the only thing colder than the air was the growing dread in the silence between the clicks and whirs of the instruments.

The July Frost
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Psychological Drama | Genre: Cozy Mystery
Bernie struggles to keep her vintage shop warm during a bizarre summer freeze while dealing with a distressed customer.

The Threadbare Clue
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Gritty Realism | Genre: Mystery
The alley, a damp vein in the city’s tired heart, exhaled the scent of mouldering leaves and stale refuse. A thin, anemic light from a distant lamp struggled against the encroaching autumn gloom, painting the slick cobblestones in shades of bruised indigo and murky ochre. It was a place of forgotten things, a narrow passage between brick walls that wore their age like scarred skin, each crack and crevice holding the city’s untold secrets.
Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation
AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: Our research into AI’s applications in creative development actively engages with genres like Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Mystery, Romance, and Cozy Mystery. We are particularly interested in how AI can assist with the expansive world-building inherent in Sci-Fi and Fantasy, the intricate plot construction required for Mystery narratives, or the nuanced character interactions central to Romance. These case studies highlight AI’s capacity to generate fresh story ideas, develop genre-appropriate dialogue, and enhance the overall storytelling and scriptwriting process.
Talent Development and Training: A critical component of our study is understanding the emerging skill sets for creative professionals navigating the digital transformation. The development of these genre-specific chapters, from Sci-Fi epics to Cozy Mystery tales, provides valuable insights into future digital publishing and film production workflows. We emphasize the importance of digital literacy and the strategic management of AI tools, equipping creators to not only adapt to new technologies but to harness them effectively for enhanced artistic production and innovation.
We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
