Blending Land-Based Stories with Digital Art
Being out at camp this summer, by the water, sharing meals around that picnic table – those are the moments that truly sink in. We snapped a ton of photos, but they’re just the beginning. This week, we’ve been taking those camp memories and learning to use digital arts to give them a fresh voice. It’s more than just tweaking a picture; it’s about bringing out the feeling of a lazy afternoon by the shore, the rustle of the tent, and the endless horizon.
Looking at this drawing of our camp, I can almost feel the breeze coming off the water. We spent time talking about this image, focusing on the textures of the sand, the weathered wood of the table, and the distant blue of the lake. We’re using these digital tools to really highlight those details, making the image feel like a drawing as well as a window back to that peaceful place. It’s a wonderful way to connect our land-based experiences with a new form of artistic expression.
Spreading the word
As our summer wraps up, I’m buzzing with ideas for our Fall and Winter program, kicking off in October. We’ll be taking all these visual storytelling skills and moving into creating our very own storybooks and publications. It feels like the perfect next step – taking these precious moments and turning them into something tangible we can share. We’ll be meeting in-person and online every Wednesday and Saturday.

A major thank you goes to The Arts Incubator Winnipeg Hub, the Ontario Arts Council Inter and Multi-Arts Projects program, Art Borups Corners and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Creative Entrepreneurship program; their support really made our incredible summer program possible. My kids and grandkids were part of this year’s project and that really made it extra special. We didn’t just create together, we all learned something new.
