Autumn’s Canvas: A Tundra of Endless Color
As we continue our journey along the Hudson Bay coast north of Arviat, a new kind of beauty is taking over the landscape: color as far as the eye can see. This isn’t the vibrant green of summer, but a rich, warm tapestry of reds, oranges, and deep browns that stretches to the horizon. The tundra, which can seem monochrome in other seasons, now glows with an earthy fire, transforming the entire world into a breathtaking canvas.
This shift in color is a natural rhythm of the Arctic, a signal that autumn is well underway. The low-lying vegetation—things like dwarf birch and bearberry—are turning from green to fiery hues, creating a stunning visual effect that changes with the light. In this wide-open space, with its endless skies and lack of trees to block the view, the sheer scale of this transformation is overwhelming. It’s a powerful reminder of how dynamic and alive this environment truly is.
Being out here and seeing this with your own eyes is an incredible experience. The contrast between the brilliant fall colors on the ground and the pale, clear sky above is something you can’t capture in a single photo. It’s a feeling of vastness and beauty that fills you up, a quiet moment of awe at the power of nature’s artistry. It’s a perfect culmination of our summer of documenting plants, showing us just how much life and color are packed into this incredible place.
