Respecting others, relationships and caring for people

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IK) is the foundation of Inuit culture and knowledge. It encompasses everything Inuit have learned over generations about living in harmony with the land and each other. It’s more than just a collection of facts; it’s a worldview that guides how Inuit interact with the world. As part of our ongoing plans to create a community of care and practice for artists, particularly those living in the city, we’re exploring different traditional values each week. This week, we’re focusing on Inuuqatigiitsiarniq, which translates to respecting others, relationships, and caring for people. This principle emphasizes the importance of strong social connections and treating everyone with respect and compassion.

Inuuqatigiitsiarniq is deeply intertwined with Inuit arts. Creating and sharing art is often a communal activity, requiring collaboration, respect for individual skills, and a shared understanding of cultural values. Whether it’s throat singing, drum dancing, or carving, the process involves building relationships, listening to different perspectives, and valuing everyone’s contributions. Moreover, sharing art with the community is an act of respect in itself, strengthening social bonds and preserving cultural heritage.

For arts organizations, incorporating Inuuqatigiitsiarniq as a core value is essential for creating a healthy and sustainable environment, especially as we strive to build this community of care. When respect and caring are prioritized, it fosters a positive atmosphere where creativity flourishes and individuals feel valued. This can lead to stronger teamwork, more meaningful artistic expression, and a greater connection with the community. By embedding Inuuqatigiitsiarniq into their operations, arts organizations can contribute to the well-being of their members and the broader community, while also strengthening their own resilience and impact within this growing network of support for artists.
