Youth, Arts and Media Team launches Indigenous Intellectual Property Survey

Discover the Power of Indigenous Voices! Take Our IP Survey Today! Join us in amplifying Indigenous voices and protecting cultural heritage! Take our survey on Indigenous Intellectual Property Protection, Data Sovereignty, and Cultural Expressions.
The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg 4 May 2024
Niriqatiginnga means “come eat with me” in Inuktitut. Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the project is designed to address issues of food insecurity with northern Indigenous communities through a highly collaborative approach engaging a range of stakeholders such as farmers, food producers, and systems innovators.

We’re thrilled to share the exciting news that the”Art Borups Corners,” project has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2024 Indigenous Intellectual Property Program grant! This incredible opportunity, announced by Minister François-Philippe Champagne on May 1, 2024, marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards better understanding why protecting and promoting Traditional Knowledge and Indigenous Cultural Expressions is so important.

The Indigenous Intellectual Property Program grants serve a crucial role in advancing reconciliation efforts and ensuring Indigenous participation in IP discussions. These grants not only provide resources for capacity building and education but also contribute to the protection of Indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions. The recipients of these grants, including organizations like the Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council and the Manitoba Métis Federation, will play pivotal roles in safeguarding Indigenous interests within the IP landscape.

Through workshops, educational initiatives and community-based participatory arts entrepreneurship, we’ll raise awareness about Indigenous Intellectual Property (IIP) rights and Indigenous Cultural Expressions (ICEs). As well, by providing a platform that respects artists’ control over their creative works, we aim to foster economic opportunities while working to safeguard cultural heritage.

But that’s not all! Our project goes beyond just workshops with our projects. We’re planning to conduct research to address northern food insecurity, optimize shipping logistics, and enhance supply chain efficiency. The Indigenous Intellectual Property Program is supporting Inuit-owned businesses and advancing self-determination, helping to pave the way for economic reconciliation through self-determination and self-reliance.

Get involved! Take Part!

Understanding Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights isn’t just about legality; it’s about respect, recognition, and reconciliation. It’s about acknowledging the rich cultural heritage of Inuit, Red River Métis and First Nations peoples, while ensuring that their rights are upheld in today’s rapidly evolving digital age.

If you’re a business owner or part of a business in the Northern regions, your input is invaluable! By participating in our survey, you’ll help contribute to a deeper understanding of Indigenous rights and help pave the way for more inclusive and respectful business environments.

Together, let’s create a community where Indigenous voices are heard, respected, and celebrated. Stay tuned for updates on our survey results and upcoming initiatives aimed at promoting Indigenous rights and cultural expressions in the North!

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect. Join us at the intersection of artistry, technology, culture and community—where every moment is a new opportunity to create.

The Art Spot Canada Under $100 Art Exhibition is coming to Winnipeg, Manitoba this August! ART SPOT was created in 2008 in Calgary to support local emerging artists. ART SPOT has curated and facilitated over 100 successful art events, including solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, workshops, concerts, body painting competitions, markets, community events and more.
Our arts show brings together creative voices from across Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, with a special focus on the communities of Dyment and Borups Corners in Melgund Township.
