Local Services Board Meeting – July 15, 2025
The Local Service Board meeting commenced on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 7:12 PM, with Chairperson Janet Connor presiding. All scheduled attendees, including Morris and Michelle Robinson, Peter Dunham, Jamie Bell, and Terri Bell, were present. The minutes from the previous meeting on June 17, 2025, were read and subsequently approved without any errors or omissions, following a motion by Janet Connor and seconded by Morris Robinson.
Correspondence received included a bill for gravel from D&D Contracting, helpful information regarding tent setup and takedown from Balla Bros., and the “In Touch” newsletter from MPAC. A significant portion of the meeting addressed business arising from previous discussions. Janet Connor extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of Canada Day, from preparation to cleanup, emphasizing the spirit of “many hands make light work.” She also expressed gratitude to all who attended and enjoyed the celebrations.
The first Silent Auction was lauded as a great success, made possible by the overwhelming generosity of numerous sponsors, including Downtown Dollar, Schmidt’s Greenhouse, James’ No Frills, Tim Hortons, PI Family Restaurant, Tupperware (Ruby Smith), Art Borups Corners, Home Hardware, CKDR, Safeway, Solomon’s & Sons, Skene’s Transfer and Supply, Dingwall Ford, Ella Lynne’s, Fifth Avenue Jewellery (Michelle Robinson), Soulless Tattoo and Vape, Renew Construction, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). An update on the cookshack extension revealed it is nearing completion, with only the gable ends, soffit materials, wiring, and lighting remaining. Additionally, Norm Balla of Balla Bros. delivered the new tents and provided a hands-on demonstration of their setup.
Several new business items were discussed and acted upon. The upcoming Music Jamboree is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with the Cookshack open for service. Morris Robinson and Janet Connor have graciously volunteered as cooks, and Michelle Robinson will secure the necessary food permit. Posters inviting musicians will be distributed soon, with more details to follow. The funding agreement with the NWMO for the new deck has been officially signed, and a quote for electrical work was received from Kusnick Electric. A motion was passed to utilize surplus funds to cover the wiring for both the new deck and the cookshack shelter, moved by Janet and seconded by Morris.
Another key decision involved purchasing Starlink Mini for the hall and canceling the existing TBayTel service; Terri Bell and Peter Dunham will oversee this transition, following a motion by Janet and seconded by Peter. Finally, an Expression of Interest will be posted for the removal and salvage of the current deck at the LSB Hall, specifically excluding the new wheelchair ramp and landing. The highest bid will be selected, and interested parties are encouraged to contact a board member for details. Sealed bids are due by 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, and a special meeting will be convened to open them. The successful bidder will be required to sign a liability waiver, with the removal completion date to be set.
The June 2025 Treasurer’s Report was presented and accepted without errors, following a motion by Janet and seconded by Peter. Looking ahead, key upcoming events include the opening of bids for the old deck removal on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 7:00 PM, and the next regular Local Service Board Meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the hall. Further details for the Music Jamboree on Saturday, September 6, 2025, will be announced.
The meeting concluded at 8:34 PM, following a motion by Janet and seconded by Morris. The minutes were posted on July 17, 2025, by Terri Bell, Secretary Treasurer of the Local Service Board of Melgund.
