Nature’s resilience is on full display as our seeded apple trees triumphantly break dormancy after a long winter. These vibrant red buds represent the successful second chapter of the community-driven Art Borups Corners Land Lab orchard program!
Our Northern Apple Orchard Wakes Up!
The arrival of spring in Northwestern Ontario always feels like a miracle, but this year it brought a very special surprise. After months buried under a thick blanket of snow and sub-zero temperatures, the ambitious Art Borups Corners Land Lab orchard project is officially showing signs of life. Everyone is beyond excited to see bright red buds emerging from the soil, signaling that our tiny apple seedlings have successfully conquered their very first winter.
This journey began last year when they planted more than 20 seeds as part of their Land Lab program. They knew that growing apples from seed in this climate would be a challenge, but these little fighters have proven themselves remarkably resilient. Because every seed carries its own unique genetics, they’re essentially watching a group of pioneers adapt to the Northern landscape in real-time.
Watching these seedlings enter their second year is a testament to the power of hands-on stewardship and patient care. Now that they have established their roots and survived the hardest test nature could throw at them, the program is ready to help them reach new heights. This is more than just a garden; it is a growing legacy of sustainability and local food security that we are honoured to support.
