Fresh from the orchard—our northwestern Ontario apples are the sweetest way to close out the summer at the Land Lab.
Celebrating a Season of Apples, Expansion, and Community at The Arts Incubator’s Northwestern Ontario Land Lab
There’s nothing that caps off the end of a successful summer at The Arts Incubator’s Land Lab quite like the taste of fresh, locally-grown apples. These beautiful northwestern Ontario apples, bright with shades of red and gold, are more than just fruit—they’re a reminder of the hard work and care that went into tending the orchard and gardens all season long. They’ve become the highlight of harvest time, a sweet marker of another year’s growth.
This summer was especially fruitful. We planted more than 20 new apple trees, all carefully prepared for the winter ahead. This year’s seedlings flourished in a spectrum of colours, from vibrant green to deep purple, promising a stronger and more resilient orchard in years to come. This year’s successes built upon the foundation of last year’s pilot program, which received support from Agriculture Canada, Manitoba Agriculture, and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
As the season winds down, the gardens and beds are being cleared and cleaned, ready for their long rest beneath the snow. What remains now is the promise of what’s to come—new trees maturing, seedlings growing stronger, and the orchard steadily expanding. For the moment, though, we’re keeping things simple.
After a summer of hard work and steady growth, we can’t wait to get back to Winnipeg for the next steps: apple pie.
