Short Stories Today: Thriller, Western, Coming-of-Age, and Slice of Life

A diverse collection of short stories by Jamie F. Bell, Eva Suluk, Leaf Richards, and Tony Eetak, spanning Westerns to Thrillers.

Voices of the Plains and City

Presented here are scenes that have been arrested in motion. These short stories are deliberately incomplete, offering character dynamics and settings without a finalized resolution. The absence of an ending creates a space for the reader to project their own expectations and theories onto the text, turning the act of reading into an exercise in speculation.

As an experiment in applied artificial intelligence research and interdisciplinary arts, this project examines the role of digital tools in modern storytelling. We are exploring how these technologies can streamline scriptwriting and narrative construction. The focus remains on enhancing digital literacy and discovering new ways to articulate human experiences.

The genres in this lineup are grounded and diverse, covering Thrillers, Westerns, and the quiet introspection of Slice of Life and Coming-of-Age tales. This post introduces a collaborative group of authors: Jamie F. Bell, Eva Suluk, Leaf Richards, and Tony Eetak. Their distinct voices bring a wide array of perspectives to these unfinished scenes.

We invite you to explore these narratives and embrace the uncertainty of the format. Read the scenes and decide for yourself how the characters navigate the challenges set before them.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

Bridging the gap between gritty realism and poetic expression, this compilation features thrillers, westerns, and coming-of-age tales rooted in Boys Love (BL). Our commitment to digital literacy drives us to explore how creative technology and AI-assisted narrative can enhance genres like cyberpunk and allegorical family sagas. Through these innovative short stories, we strive to lead the next evolution of publishing, offering readers a unique blend of slice of life intimacy and expansive storytelling.

A man crouched in a dusty attic, holding an old ledger in the beam of his flashlight, looking worried.

The Pallid Ink

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Family Saga | Genre: Thriller

A biting autumn chill permeates the ancient, dusty attic of the Blackwood estate. Jared, driven by an unsettling premonition, searches through generations of forgotten relics, his torch beam a lone probe against the oppressive darkness, as a sense of urgency and unseen eyes press down upon him.

Two teenagers on a snowy bench in a futuristic city, a mysterious blue glow emanating from a backpack.

A Frost-Kissed Bargain

Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Cyberpunk | Genre: Western

The city’s perpetual hum, a low thrum of processors and distant transit, felt oddly muffled under the first unexpected blanket of snow. It wasn’t much, just a dusting, but it clung to the skeletal branches of the plaza’s few surviving trees and whitened the worn concrete of the benches, making the usual grime feel momentarily pristine. Overhead, the holographic adverts for synth-protein and cyber-enhancements shimmered, casting their garish colours onto the pristine white, creating a kaleidoscope of fleeting, artificial brilliance. The air, thin and sharp, carried the faint, metallic tang of static electricity from the power conduits running beneath the walkways, mingling with the earthy scent of wet soil and cold asphalt.

A young man, John, sits contemplatively in a dimly lit, old TV control room, bathed in winter light.

The Winter Broadcast

Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Gritty Realism | Genre: Coming-of-Age

The control room, usually a chaotic hub of activity, felt eerily still, its silence broken only by the distant hum of ancient equipment and the nervous cough of someone down the hall. Winter had settled deep into Northwood, pressing against the worn brick of the community television station, and an even colder dread had settled into the hearts of its small crew. This room, once a canvas for youthful ambition, now felt like a tomb, waiting for its final broadcast.

The Frozen Seedbed

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Allegorical | Genre: Slice of Life

A deep winter morning clings to the small community arts centre in Northwestern Ontario, where a diverse group of young adults, emerging artists, and passionate individuals have convened. Inside, the chill of the boreal landscape is held at bay by the quiet warmth of shared purpose, coffee, and the clanking of an old radiator. This is a roundtable discussion, a delicate crucible where individual artistic ambitions are meant to forge into a collective, a non-profit arts organization. The air is thick with anticipation, tinged with the faint scent of damp wool and old paper, as the participants prepare to navigate the complex, hopeful journey of creating something lasting.

A young man reflects by a swollen river as another figure departs into the spring wilderness.

The Current’s Bearing

Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Poetic / Lyrical | Genre: Boys Love (BL)

The river, swollen with spring melt, surged with a relentless, cold power. Its sound, a low, continuous growl, swallowed all lesser noises, forcing Owen’s world into a contained pocket of damp air and the rhythmic crunch of shale under his boots. The sky above was a bruised lavender, pregnant with the promise of more rain, and the skeletal branches of the cottonwoods lining the bank seemed to reach, almost pleadingly, towards the coming deluge.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
