A Cornerstone of Our Community Garden!

The growing season is officially underway, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! As part of our community recreation, sustainable agriculture and food security program, one of the very first plants to go into our grow-beds this year was, of course, the ever-popular lettuce.

You can see in the photo how our young leaf lettuce seedlings are already settling in, promising a bounty of crisp, fresh greens. We’ve truly grown fond of gardening and cultivating our own food, and it’s a joy to capture and document every step of this journey.

Why We Love Lettuce: Healthy, Delicious, and Sustainable!

Lettuce isn’t just easy to grow; it’s also incredibly beneficial and a fantastic staple for any food security initiative. Here’s why we’re so excited about this leafy green:

  • Nutrient Powerhouse: Don’t let its delicate appearance fool you! Lettuce, particularly darker varieties like romaine and loose-leaf types, is packed with essential vitamins and minerals. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A (beta-carotene), and Vitamin C, along with folate and potassium. These nutrients contribute to bone health, vision, immune function, and overall well-being.
  • Hydration Hero: With its high water content, lettuce is incredibly hydrating, making it a refreshing addition to any meal, especially during warmer months.
  • Dietary Fiber: While not as fibrous as some other vegetables, lettuce still provides a good amount of dietary fiber, aiding in digestion and promoting gut health.
  • Versatility in the Kitchen: From crisp salads and vibrant wraps to sandwiches and even smoothies, fresh lettuce is incredibly versatile. Its mild flavor makes it a perfect companion for a wide range of ingredients, allowing for endless culinary creativity. There’s nothing quite like harvesting your own organic lettuce and enjoying it just minutes later!
  • Sustainable Agriculture Star: Growing lettuce is a fantastic example of sustainable agriculture. It generally has a relatively short growing cycle, can be succession planted for continuous harvests, and is well-suited for various growing methods, including raised beds and even container gardening. Our efforts to cultivate local food reduce transportation emissions and support a healthier planet.

This year’s growing season builds on the incredible momentum and success of our pilot programming established last year. We’re seeing our community garden flourish, becoming a vibrant hub for learning, sharing, and connecting with nature. The simple act of planting these lettuce seedlings fills us with optimism for a season of abundance and strengthened community food systems.

This year’s program builds on pilot programming established last year with support from Manitoba Agriculture and the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, through the Indigenous Food Systems and Agriculture program. We’re excited to see the impacts and outcomes of those experiences continuing this summer, with an expanded program.

Stay tuned for more updates as our garden grows! We look forward to sharing our harvest.

Our Monarch Mission

This frost acts as a lethal "kill switch," rupturing the plant’s cells and ending its life cycle for the season. This icy death is exactly why seeds require stratification; they must remain dormant to avoid being destroyed by the very cold seen here. Once this freezing cycle passes, the seeds finally receive the signal that it is safe to wake up and grow.

Stratification and The Big Chill!

Art Borups Corners Apr 14, 2026
This article explores the importance and overlooked beauty of milkweed, highlighting its essential role in supporting the Monarch butterfly and broader pollinator ecosystems. It connects this ecological value to the community-led Milkweed to Market project in Melgund Township, where residents participate in planting, seed bomb making, and habitat restoration through arts and recreation programming. The piece also reflects on how these small, local actions contribute to a deeper understanding of the land, including informal baseline observations tied to the nearby Deep Geological Repository impact assessment, while extending into creative practices like papermaking and youth entrepreneurship.

The Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project (MINIAP) is a community-driven research and policy initiative examining the environmental, social, cultural, economic, and long-term safety impacts of the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel in Melgund, Ontario. Aligned with the federal impact assessment process led by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and focused on the proposal advanced by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, this integrated project analyzes groundwater protection, nuclear waste storage safety, Indigenous rights and treaty interests, environmental monitoring, long-term radioactive waste containment, emergency preparedness, regulatory oversight, community health, regional economic impacts, and intergenerational stewardship. Designed to enhance public participation, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making, the Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project provides accessible analysis, technical review, and community engagement resources to support informed input into Canada’s nuclear waste management strategy and the federal impact assessment process.
