Wonder as a Resource

Imagination is the only tool that can actually build something out of nothing.
Art Borups Corners Mar 5, 2026
Background for Wonder as a Resource

How to protect your creative spark when the practical world feels overwhelming.

Imagination is often treated as a luxury, a decorative flourish we add to our lives once the bills are paid and the logistics are settled.

But for those of us leading small, grassroots creative projects, imagination is actually our most vital survival strategy.

It is the ability to see a community hub where others see an empty storefront, or to envision a festival in a public park with zero budget. When things get tough—when funding falls through or the workload feels impossible—our instinct is to tighten up and focus solely on the practical. We switch into survival mode, where every thought is dedicated to how instead of what if. While logistics are necessary, staying in survival mode for too long is the quickest way to extinguish the very spark that started the project in the first place.

Why does this matter so much for a young creative leader? Because your primary currency isn’t capital; it is vision. Large institutions have the luxury of being unimaginative because they have the budget to hire consultants and buy pre-packaged solutions. You do not have that. Your lack of resources is actually an invitation to innovate. When you cannot afford the standard way of doing things, you are forced to invent a better way. This is why imagination must be protected at all costs. It is the engine that transforms scarcity into abundance. If you lose your ability to dream about what your organization could be, you lose your greatest competitive advantage.

To preserve this spirit when times are lean, we must embrace the concept of Radical Play. This does not mean ignoring your responsibilities; it means intentionally carving out spaces where the rules of the real world do not apply. In your team meetings, spend the first ten minutes discussing impossible ideas. Ask questions like, If we had an infinite budget but no electricity, how would we host this show? These thought experiments keep the creative muscles flexible. They remind you and your collaborators that you are creators first and administrators second. Play is the antidote to the rigidity that stress creates in our minds. It keeps the atmosphere of your organization light and receptive.

Another approach is to seek wonder in the mundane. In a grassroots setting, we are often working with found materials, donated spaces, and borrowed time. Instead of seeing these as limitations, we can choose to see them as prompts. A stack of cardboard isn’t trash; it is a set design. A rainy day isn’t a ruined event; it is an opportunity for an intimate acoustic session. This shift in perspective requires a quiet mind. You cannot see the potential in your surroundings if your brain is constantly buzzing with anxiety. This is why rest is a creative act. When you step away from the spreadsheet and take a walk, you are giving your imagination the oxygen it needs to breathe.

Finally, remember that imagination is a collective resource. You do not have to carry the entire vision on your shoulders. Some of the most resilient grassroots movements were built by people who simply sat in a circle and shared their what-ifs. When things are tough, lean into your community. Ask them what they want to see, what they dream of, and what brings them joy.

Their hope will fuel yours. Imagination is a renewable energy source, but it requires a community to keep the grid running. Stay optimistic, stay curious, and remember that the most beautiful things are often built by those who refused to stop dreaming in the dark.
