Uncharted Territories
The power of a story often lies in what is withheld. These short stories are exercises in omission, presenting unfinished tales that force the reader to confront the unknown. whether it is a crime scene in a Mystery or a diplomatic crisis in a Political Thriller, the lack of a resolution amplifies the tension, making the existing text resonate with greater significance.
This project creates a dialogue between human creativity and applied artificial intelligence research. It is an exploration of how digital tools can serve as functional partners in the writing process, pushing the boundaries of traditional storytelling and scriptwriting. Through this work, we aim to refine digital literacy skills and develop new workflows for the creation of narrative art.
This collection spans the speculative and the conspiratorial. We feature genres ranging from Sci-Fi and Urban Fantasy to Mystery and Political Thrillers. The authors featured in this post are Jamie F. Bell and Leaf Richards, whose combined efforts populate these diverse narrative landscapes.
We invite you to take up the mantle of the storyteller. These fragments are unfinished, but they are not empty. They are invitations to speculate, to theorize, and to imagine the climax that these scenes are building toward. Your interpretation is the missing piece of the puzzle.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories
Exploring the gritty realism of sci-fi, political thriller, and urban fantasy genres, this series underscores our commitment to the future of publishing. We utilize creative technology to dissect how AI-assisted narrative impacts styles ranging from dark comedy to hardboiled noir and stream of consciousness. These short stories serve as practical case studies in digital literacy, illustrating the dynamic ways in which mystery and coming-of-age narratives can be reimagined for a contemporary digital readership.

Rust-Belt Constellations
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Dark Comedy | Genre: Sci-Fi
The roof of the old Monarch Mill was the best place in town to see the stars. Up here, the orange glow of the streetlights was muted, and the sky opened up, vast and pricked with light. The gritty surface of the tar paper was still warm from the day’s heat, a pleasant contrast to the cooling late-August air that carried the faint, metallic scent of the nearby rail yard.

The Stutter of Brick Dust
Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Gritty Realism | Genre: Mystery
The alley reeked of stale beer, damp cardboard, and the metallic tang that often clung to the forgotten spaces of the city. A cold spring drizzle had just eased, leaving every brick face weeping, every grimy puddle shivering under the dull glow of a distant streetlamp. Mike hunched, his breath puffing visible in the chill, as Patricia meticulously traced a finger along the uneven edge of a loose grate. This wasn’t a game; the air was thick with something far heavier than just the damp.

The Thermochromic Lament
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Coming-of-Age | Genre: Sci-Fi
The air in Priya’s office was a tangible thing, thick with recycled oxygen, the scent of ozone from the server farm two floors below, and the oppressive humidity of a Toronto July that had long ago forgotten what a temperate summer felt like. Outside her triple-paned window, the city shimmered under a perpetual ochre haze, the CN Tower a barely-visible spike piercing a soupy sky. The only sound was the hum of the building’s life support and the tinny, delayed voice of Mr. Hesh arguing with her from a boardroom in orbital low-grav.

Trespass on Greener Ground
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Stream of Consciousness | Genre: Urban Fantasy
Vertical exploration is a different kind of freedom. Down on the street, you’re trapped by the grid, a rat in a maze designed by city planners. But the moment your feet leave the pavement and find purchase on a fire escape, the rules change. The city unfolds, becomes a landscape of possibility instead of a set of directions.

The Conifers’ Council
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Hardboiled Noir | Genre: Political Thriller
The chill of a late autumn morning bit at my exposed cheeks, but I barely noticed. My focus, honed by countless hours of ‘Midnight Detective’ reruns and a profound distrust of adult ‘discussions’, was fixed on the public bandstand. Below, two figures moved, their conversation a low hum against the backdrop of rustling, dried-up leaves. This, I decided, was a case, pure and unadulterated, unfolding right before my very eyes.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
