A nonprofit website has a job to do. It needs to explain what the organization does, publish information about its programs, make resources available, attract participants and give funders and community partners a clear picture of its work. It also needs to be manageable by the people who run the organization.

Our Arts Incubator develops websites for nonprofits, charities, arts organizations and community initiatives. We work with WordPress and other web technologies to build new sites, improve existing ones and develop the features organizations need to publish and maintain their work.

Our projects range from straightforward organizational websites to larger publishing systems with custom templates, searchable content, interactive features and connections to external data. We can take on a complete development project or work on a specific part of a website that needs attention.

WordPress development and redesign

WordPress is a practical publishing system for organizations that need control over their own websites. It can support a basic organizational site, but it can also be developed into a much more capable publishing environment.

We build and customize WordPress websites around the structure of the organization. This includes page templates, navigation, program sections, publication areas, event listings and custom content types. Where existing themes or plugins are not sufficient, we can develop additional functionality rather than forcing the organization to work around unsuitable software.

For an existing website, the work may begin with its current theme, plugins, content and technical setup. We can reorganize pages, improve navigation, replace outdated components, address performance problems and make the site easier to maintain. A complete rebuild is not always necessary.

Publishing systems for programs and projects

Organizations with several programs often need more than a collection of ordinary web pages. They may be publishing project updates, research reports, community stories, event listings, photographs, educational resources and material from partner organizations.

We develop publishing structures that make this information easier to organize and find. This can include dedicated project sections, reusable page templates, categorized publications, image collections and searchable archives. We also help establish consistent approaches to titles, descriptions, images and internal links so that material remains understandable as the website grows.

For larger publishing projects, we can develop static website generation workflows. These allow approved content to be assembled into fast, independently served web pages. They can be particularly useful for extensive story collections, digital archives and sites where performance and reliable publication are important.

Search engine optimization and technical performance

A website needs to work for visitors and search engines. We address the technical and editorial details that affect how pages are found, interpreted and displayed.

This includes page titles, meta descriptions, heading structures, canonical URLs, internal links, XML sitemaps, image alt text and image metadata. We can also review how search engines encounter a site’s publications, photographs, stories and other resources. For organizations with substantial image collections, we pay particular attention to image sitemaps, descriptive filenames, captions and structured page content.

Performance work can include image optimization, caching, script and stylesheet review, database improvements and reducing unnecessary requests that delay page rendering. We use technical testing to identify problems and prioritize changes that make a measurable difference.

Website maintenance and technical support

A website needs attention after launch. WordPress updates, plugin compatibility, backups, security, broken links, changes to hosting and new publishing requirements all create ongoing work.

We provide technical support for organizations that do not have an internal web developer. This can be arranged as a monthly maintenance agreement or as individual assignments. Support may involve troubleshooting, updates, content changes, performance improvements and development of new features.

We can also help staff and volunteers understand the publishing system so that routine updates do not require a developer every time.

Who we work with

Our website clients include nonprofits, charities, arts organizations, community associations, local initiatives and collaborative projects. Some need their first proper website. Others have been publishing online for years and need help managing a growing collection of information.

We understand that a website is often maintained by people whose main responsibilities lie elsewhere. Our aim is to build something the organization can actually use, with a structure that reflects its programs and enough flexibility to accommodate new work.
