The Arts Incubator

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The project is grounded in a dynamic process of collaborative engagement and capacity building, utilizing arts-based research methodologies to ensure the work is both relevant and empowering. A key focus is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), which positions young people as leaders in investigating their own economic realities and co-designing their futures. Through a series of co-design workshops, digital storytelling projects, and community forums, ECO-STAR North facilitates intergenerational knowledge transfer, connecting youth with Elders and established creators. This hands-on, community-led approach ensures the resulting toolkit is not an academic exercise, but a living, practical resource built by and for Northern innovators, strengthening a resilient and interconnected creative ecosystem.

This week, team members engaged in meaningful discussions about leadership, emphasizing the importance of actions over titles as part of our 2024-2025 Fall and Winter Arts Incubator mentorship program. We shared insights on how intentional actions can inspire others and foster teamwork, and we expressed our gratitude to Lucy Eetak for her dedication in encouraging us all to take on new challenges. As we continue to connect with our community through upcoming events and projects, we are excited about the opportunities to strengthen our arts initiatives and support one another.

Developing Leadership Through Action

The team got together on November 11 for our weekly mentorship meeting and group discussions. This week, we focused on the theme of developing leadership through action. We looked into different leadership styles and discussed how everyday actions can show leadership. It was clear that leadership goes beyond simply taking charge; it also involves supporting others and encouraging teamwork.

One key takeaway was that leadership is built through consistent actions, not just by holding a title. When team members step up and act with intention, they inspire those around them. We want to extend our gratitude to Lucy Eetak for her support and encouragement this summer. Her support motivates team members to take on new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm.

Looking ahead, we will visit the arts incubator land lab site next week to connect with the community. Our discussions will center around food security, as well as participatory arts and music activities planned for next year. Exciting events are on the horizon, including a Canada Day festival in July and an artist retreat in August. We will definitely be a part of these celebrations.

We also brainstormed ideas for National Kindness Week, which will focus on climate diplomacy, entrepreneurship, and helping arts organizations build their capacity. In our effort to revitalize the Northwestern Ontario Arts Collective, we plan to reach out to the Ontario Arts Council now that programs can resume. This collaboration can bring significant support to our local arts community.

In a sharing moment, Tony showcased some amazing music he created with his dad, Paul. It’s always inspiring to see how art and creativity bring people together. A big thank you goes out to the team members who contribute so much: Jamie, Tony, Paul, Terri, Maurice, Olaf, and Kami. Your hard work and passion for the arts make a difference in our community.

As we move forward, let’s continue to embody leadership through our actions, support each other, and foster a spirit of collaboration. Together, we can achieve great things and inspire others along the way.

About our Winter 2025 program

Our fall and winter 2025 program in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is focused on exploring the intersection of digital skills, storytelling, creative entrepreneurship, and leadership in the arts. We’re dedicated to equipping artists with the tools and knowledge to navigate the evolving digital landscape, empowering them to bring their creative visions to life in new, innovative ways. This program is a space for collaboration and growth, where artists can sharpen their digital skills, explore the potential of emerging technologies, and build the leadership capabilities needed to drive their own creative ventures forward. This year’s program activities are supported by the OpenAI Researcher Access Program. We meet every week in person and virtually and all are welcome. To join us, contact us at info@artsincubator.ca

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect. Join us at the intersection of artistry, technology, culture and community—where every moment is a new opportunity to create.
