Stories Today: Espionage Meets Dark Comedy

Unfinished tales blend espionage intrigue, slice-of-life romance, and dark comedy, awaiting your imaginative touch.
The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg 18 Oct 2025

Covert Operations and Unconventional Love: A Surprising Mix

These stories are not complete works but rather incomplete narrative fragments of short stories, moments captured mid-scene, or pages torn from a larger, unseen book. They offer glimpses into worlds just beginning to unfold or abruptly ending, inviting readers to imagine what came before and what happens next. This unique format encourages a participatory reading experience, where the absence of a definitive conclusion becomes an invitation for personal interpretation and creativity.

This collection is an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts and applied artificial intelligence research. It explores how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process, shaping new forms of storytelling, scriptwriting and enhancing digital literacy skills and workflows. The project aims to understand the evolving relationship between human imagination and computational assistance in literary creation.

This post delves into the unexpected combinations of Espionage/Spy Fiction, Slice of Life, Romance, Dark Comedy, and Boys Love (BL). Jamie F. Bell contributes to this eclectic mix, offering tales that range from clandestine operations to intimate personal moments and darkly humorous situations. The stories provide a varied and engaging reading experience.

We invite you to engage with these unfinished tales, not just as a reader absorbing words on a page, but as a co-creator. Allow your imagination to extend beyond the presented text, filling in the silences and envisioning the continuations that only you can write in your mind. Discover the narrative potential within these intriguing beginnings.

A Certain Shade of Crimson

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Medical Drama | Genre: Espionage / Spy Fiction

The city simmered, a vast, indifferent beast humming beneath a relentless summer sky. Air conditioning units rattled their metallic song from every window, a mechanical chorus against the chirp of unseen cicadas. Inside, the cool, artificial quiet of the university halls offered little respite from the oppressive heat, yet it carried its own brand of suffocating calm. Kim, a flicker of northern ice still in his gaze, navigated this unfamiliar landscape of concrete and quiet desperation, his mind a tangle of homesickness and nascent unease.

Freeze of the Prairie Line

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Satirical / Ironic | Genre: Slice of Life

The air, sharp and unyielding, bit at Steve’s exposed knuckles. A grey smear of sky pressed down on the desolate expanse of the Manitoba prairie, where the only sign of life was the ’24-Hour Bite Stop’ — a solitary beacon of flickering neon and exhaust fumes. Inside, the diner trembled with the passing of another semi, its groan a familiar counterpoint to the impending, suffocating storm.

Stains

Author: Art Borups Corners | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Romance

Jeff and Sam are stuck in a drafty, under-heated community center basement late at night, trying to set up for a local art showcase while debating the merits of staying in a small northern town.

Summer’s Sour Bounty

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Post-Apocalyptic Survival | Genre: Dark Comedy

The air shimmered, thick and hot, over the cracked tarmac. A perpetual summer haze blurred the distant skeletal remains of what used to be telephone poles, their wires long since snapped or scavenged. The scent of baked dust and something vaguely organic, perpetually rotting, clung to the back of Rowen’s throat. Flies, thick and buzzing, moved in lazy circles around puddles of stagnant water that held the oily sheen of decay. Everything felt like it was simmering, slowly cooking under the unrelenting glare of a sun that seemed entirely indifferent to the world it illuminated.

The Geometry of Anxious Waiting

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Psychological Thriller | Genre: Boys Love (BL)

The checkered blanket is perfectly square with the path. On its surface, a carefully curated ecosystem of a date: a container of slightly-crushed egg mayonnaise sandwiches, two bottles of lukewarm lemonade, and a bag of crisps, already going soft in the humid air. Everything is ready. Everything except the other person.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: At the incubator, our studies delve into AI’s dynamic contributions to creative development, with projects illustrating its utility across Espionage/Spy Fiction, Slice of Life, Dark Comedy, Boys Love (BL), and Romance. We are examining AI’s capability to assist with intricate plotlines characteristic of spy thrillers, facilitate authentic character interactions for slice-of-life and romance narratives, fine-tune comedic timing in dark comedies, and even navigate the unique blending required for genres like Boys Love (BL). This demonstrates AI’s versatility in enriching storytelling and scriptwriting across diverse stylistic demands.

Talent Development and Training: Our research concurrently investigates the essential new skills creative professionals must cultivate. The creation of these specific chapters, encompassing Espionage/Spy Fiction, Slice of Life, Dark Comedy, Boys Love (BL), and Romance, highlights the evolving demands on digital literacy and proficiency in managing AI tools. This work provides insight into future digital publishing and film production workflows, where understanding how to effectively collaborate with AI—from crafting compelling espionage plots to generating nuanced slice-of-life dialogues—will be crucial for innovation and production efficiency.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
