Stories Today: Boys Love (BL) Meets Environmental Fiction

Explore unfinished Boys Love (BL) and Environmental Fiction tales by Jamie F. Bell, inviting your creative interpretation.
The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg 21 Sep 2025

Connecting with Unfinished Journeys

This collection features unfinished tales and short stories, each offering a window into a narrative paused at a crucial juncture. These are not complete arcs but evocative snapshots, like individual frames from a larger film. They challenge readers to piece together context and envision the future, fostering a deeper, more active form of engagement.

This project is an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It investigates how digital tools can serve as a partner in the writing process, cultivating new storytelling forms, refining scriptwriting, and strengthening digital literacy skills and workflows. The aim is to push creative boundaries through collaboration.

Today’s selection spans compelling genres, including the unique dynamics of Boys Love (BL) and the urgent themes of Environmental Fiction, alongside the familiar settings of Contemporary Fiction, the personal growth of Coming-of-Age, and the intricate plots of Political Thriller. These diverse stories are presented by author Jamie F. Bell.

We invite you to immerse yourself in these narratives, to consider their possibilities and imagine their unfoldings. Your creative participation is essential in completing these unfinished works within your own understanding.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

Two teenage boys stand facing each other by a large bronze statue, one clutching a sketchbook protectively.

A Treachery of Pocket Watches

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Psychological Thriller | Genre: Boys Love (BL)

The late afternoon sun throws long, distorted shapes across the flagstones surrounding the bronze figures of Alice and her companions. It’s the awkward hour in Central Park when the tourist tide has ebbed but the after-work joggers have yet to arrive, leaving the space in a peculiar, quiet limbo. A cool breeze rustles the already-browning leaves of a nearby oak, a premature hint of autumn in the August air.

An Absence Beneath the Ice

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Action-Adventure | Genre: Environmental Fiction

Johnnie trudges through the desolate beauty of an early winter forest, the air crisp and cold, stripping away distractions and forcing a somber reflection on the changing seasons and the quiet despair of environmental decline.

A deserted community hall at dusk, with neatly stacked plastic chairs reflecting a sense of emptiness.

The Resonance of Empty Chairs

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Grimdark Fantasy | Genre: Contemporary Fiction

The air, thick with the damp scent of fallen leaves and the distant, acrid tang of woodsmoke, pressed against the windowpanes of the community hall. Outside, a bruised-purple twilight was bleeding across the sky, stripping the last defiant golds and oranges from the maple trees that lined the unkempt car park. Inside, the heating clanked to life with a rusty sigh, struggling to chase the pervasive autumnal chill from the large, echoing room. The fluorescent lights overhead, too bright and unforgiving, hummed a low, constant thrum, casting a sickly sheen on the rows of cheap plastic chairs that sat, mostly empty, awaiting attendees who might never arrive. Every scuff on the polished linoleum floor, every faded stain on the beige acoustic tiles, seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it, adding to the room’s deep, quiet exhaustion.

Where the Powder Horns Lie

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Coming-of-Age

The air shimmered, thick with heat and the acrid tang of burnt gunpowder. Below a sky bruised purple at the edges, a field churned with the mock-violence of men in wool and linen, their muskets spitting fire and smoke. The distant thud of a cannon vibrated through the dry earth, a rumble that settled deep in the chest.

A Canvas of Cold Intrigue

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Political Thriller

The wind howled a forgotten tune against the frost-patterned window of Rory’s tiny studio apartment, a thin, persistent whistle that cut through the silence. Inside, the only other sound was the wheeze of the ancient refrigerator and the faint, rhythmic tap of Rory’s finger against his worn wooden desk. A single bare bulb, its filament a tired orange, cast long, wavering shadows across the half-finished canvases, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the frigid air. The scent of turpentine and old coffee clung to everything, a familiar comfort against the biting winter outside.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: In our project, we actively study AI’s role in shaping diverse narratives, from the intricate political landscapes of Political Thrillers to the emotional journeys of Coming-of-Age stories, the thematic depth of Environmental Fiction, and the unique stylistic elements of Boys Love (BL). Our research delves into AI’s capability to handle genre-specific challenges such as constructing complex political intrigue, developing nuanced character relationships, integrating scientific concepts for environmental narratives, or adapting to specific cultural and stylistic tropes. AI serves as a powerful assistant in brainstorming plot developments, refining character motivations, and generating dialogue that resonates with the core essence of each genre, thereby enhancing storytelling and scriptwriting.

Talent Development and Training: A core component of our research focuses on the new skills required by creative professionals operating within these evolving ecosystems. The creation of these case study chapters across varied genres underscores the shifting demands on artists within digital publishing and film production. We emphasize the development of digital literacy, the strategic management of AI tools for tasks like world-building and character development, and a collaborative mindset essential for integrating AI into creative workflows. This prepares a new generation of storytellers to effectively navigate and innovate within the transforming creative industries.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
