The Arts Incubator

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The project is grounded in a dynamic process of collaborative engagement and capacity building, utilizing arts-based research methodologies to ensure the work is both relevant and empowering. A key focus is Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), which positions young people as leaders in investigating their own economic realities and co-designing their futures. Through a series of co-design workshops, digital storytelling projects, and community forums, ECO-STAR North facilitates intergenerational knowledge transfer, connecting youth with Elders and established creators. This hands-on, community-led approach ensures the resulting toolkit is not an academic exercise, but a living, practical resource built by and for Northern innovators, strengthening a resilient and interconnected creative ecosystem.

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg September 27, 2025

Narratives in the Making

These pages offer a compelling look at unfinished tales, presenting scenes that feel like moments captured just as they unfold. They challenge the reader to fill the narrative gaps, envisioning what has led up to each point and anticipating the story’s future, thus becoming an integral part of its unfolding.

This collection operates as an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It explores how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process, shaping new forms of storytelling, scriptwriting, and enhancing digital literacy skills and workflows.

Today’s collection, primarily by Jamie F. Bell, explores a fascinating mix of genres, including the transformative journeys of Coming-of-Age, the extraordinary feats of Superhero narratives, the speculative futures of Sci-Fi, the shadowy depths of Noir, and the unique blend of Boys Love (BL).

As you read, consider yourself an active participant in these worlds. These unfinished tales are a canvas awaiting your imaginative strokes to bring them to their full, unique conclusions.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A young man with dark hair, his white t-shirt stained with chili, looking calmly at the viewer with a slight smirk while holding a piece of chili. Another blurry figure looks mortified in the background of a university cafeteria.

The First Spill

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Coming-of-Age

Caleb, a nervous first-year university student, accidentally spills a tray of chili all over Jimmy, a composed and theatrically-spoken second-year, during their first week in the bustling campus cafeteria.

A young woman in a grey parka crouches behind a snowy boulder, observing a strange, glowing metallic rig in a vast, icy Northern landscape.

The Unfolding Permafrost Veil

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Superhero | Genre: Superhero

The low, guttural hum began like a rumour across the frozen tundra, vibrating through the soles of Skyler’s insulated boots long before it reached her ears. A weak, bruised sun, barely clearing the horizon, cast long, distorted shadows across the endless expanse of snow-dusted spruce and rock, turning the world into a study in desaturated greys and purples. The air itself felt brittle, sharp with the promise of frostbite, each breath a painful contract with the sub-zero reality of the deep North. Something was fundamentally out of sync with the age-old rhythm of the winter, a mechanical discord in a symphony of silence.

An older man, Don, sits on the edge of a bed, his hand resting on the empty pillow beside him, looking wistfully into soft morning light.

The Fraying Edges of Dawn

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: First-Person Narrative | Genre: Sci-Fi

The morning light, thin and hesitant, fought its way through the gap in the curtains, painting a pale, indifferent stripe across the wall. Don lay still, the heavy thrum of the Somnus rig beneath his pillow vibrating faintly against his skull, a lingering echo of a reality that felt more real than this one. The scent of lavender, Margaret’s favourite, was fading from his nostrils, replaced by the faint, stale odour of his own room. He felt her hand, cool and familiar, just moments ago tucked into his, a phantom weight now. The mattress, unforgiving and singular, pressed against his back, a stark reminder of the solitary space he now occupied.

A weary detective, Marvin Simpson, stands in a rain-slicked alley at night, his face illuminated by a harsh streetlamp.

The Somnambulist’s Inquiry

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Satire | Genre: Noir

The city, a permanent smear of grey and concrete, stretched out beyond my office window. Spring had officially arrived, marked not by birdsong or sunshine, but by a relentless, indifferent drizzle that coated everything in a dull sheen. The air in my small office hung heavy with the smell of stale coffee and damp wool, a scent as familiar as the ache in my joints. Another Monday, another deluge, and I was contemplating a ‘lead’ that smelled less like a case and more like a fever dream.

The Ravine at Mile Eighty

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Adventure | Genre: Boys Love (BL)

Pinned down in a narrow, snow-choked ravine, two rivals are forced to rely on each other as a posse closes in and a winter storm worsens.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: In “Storytelling and the Arts,” we’re actively investigating AI’s impact on creative development, with our case studies spanning Coming-of-Age, Sci-Fi, Boys Love (BL), Superhero, and Noir genres. We analyze how AI can assist in crafting character arcs central to Coming-of-Age narratives, developing expansive world-building for Sci-Fi and Superhero stories, exploring unique relationship dynamics in Boys Love (BL), and building the atmospheric suspense and intricate dialogue characteristic of Noir. This research helps us understand AI’s capability in generating genre-specific elements and accelerating scriptwriting processes.

Talent Development and Training: Our ongoing research also focuses on identifying the new skills crucial for creative professionals in an era of digital transformation. The development of chapters within Coming-of-Age, Sci-Fi, Boys Love (BL), Superhero, and Noir through AI tools serves as a practical blueprint for future digital publishing and film production workflows. This process emphasizes the need for advanced digital literacy, proficiency in ethically managing AI collaboration tools, and the ability to curate AI-generated suggestions to maintain artistic integrity and narrative coherence.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.

This beautiful, but heavily worn, Volvo P1800 sports coupe—famous for its elegant design and starring role in The Saint—now sits quietly, its original red paint fading to purple. The distinct curves and chrome details are still visible beneath the rust, suggesting a glamorous life that ended here among the trees.
