Echoes of Narratives Yet to Be

This collection houses unfinished tales, segments of short stories poised at crucial turning points. They function as partial views, akin to pages pulled from an ongoing work or scenes captured mid-action, compelling readers to consider the broader context and potential continuations of each story.

The project is an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It explores how digital tools can function as a partner in the writing process, influencing new forms of storytelling, scriptwriting, and enhancing digital literacy skills and workflows.

Today’s post showcases genres ranging from the sharp wit of Satire and the personal growth of Coming-of-Age, to the weighty conflicts of a Legal Thriller and the stark landscape of Post-Apocalyptic Survival. Leaf Richards and Jamie F. Bell are the featured authors.

Dive into these incomplete narratives and let your imagination serve as the bridge between what is written and what remains to be conceived, turning you into an active participant.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A woman with a tense expression pushes through a narrow, dark underground passage, lit by a blue glow from an object she holds.

The Cairn’s Silent Witness

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: High Fantasy | Genre: Coming-of-Age

The boreal forest pressed in, a dense wall of spruce and pine, its summer heat thick and humid, smelling of damp earth and resin. Underfoot, the moss-cushioned ground gave way to sharp, hidden roots. Andie clutched the rough leather map, her knuckles white. Rex moved ahead, a silent shadow among the trees, his eyes scanning for movement. Saol, ever observant, checked their back trail, the rustle of leaves amplified by their frantic pace.

A small child in a white snowsuit stands in the arctic, touching a malfunctioning glowing pillar as a black tendril emerges from the ground and wraps around her ankle.

Whiteout Protocol

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Journalistic | Genre: Satire

The thermal undersuit was scratchy. Not the gentle, woolly kind of scratchy her gran knitted, but a stiff, synthetic irritation that felt like a thousand tiny needles against her skin. It was, according to Mr. Sterling, ‘state-of-the-art moisture-wicking technology designed for peak human performance,’ but to Poppy, age nine, it was just a bad jumper you couldn’t take off.

A steaming mug of hot chocolate with melting whipped cream by a snowy window.

Brewing Old Regrets

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Contemporary Drama

The arrival of winter’s first snowfall wraps Declan’s isolated old house in a profound silence, a stark backdrop to his internal turmoil as he prepares hot chocolate, a once comforting ritual now steeped in the melancholic reflections of a past decision and its painful aftermath.

A lawyer with a complex expression, holding a legal document, in a busy Winnipeg coffee shop after an embarrassing incident.

A Winter Unveiling in the Exchange

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Legal Thriller

The mid-afternoon sun, a pale, watery orb behind the low-slung clouds, did little to thaw the city’s brittle edges. Below, the sidewalks of Winnipeg’s Exchange District were slick with compacted snow, reflecting the diffused light in a myriad of grey-white gleams. James Davies, chin tucked into the collar of his heavy wool coat, navigated the indifferent crush of pedestrians, a briefcase clamped under his arm like a vital organ. The city hummed around him, a low, constant vibration that seemed to emanate from the very frozen earth, carrying with it the scent of exhaust fumes and the promise of more snowfall. He was late, or rather, precisely on time, which, in his world, felt indistinguishable from late.

Two figures, James and Benton, stand on a crumbling forest track, looking tense. The autumn woods are muted and show signs of environmental distress, with strange leaf colors and a still, iridescent puddle.

A Trace of Something Unseen

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Post-Apocalyptic Survival | Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Survival

The air held a metallic tang, thin and sharp, like old blood mixed with rain. James pulled the collar of his jacket higher, the worn canvas doing little against the insidious chill that seemed to seep into his bones, independent of the actual temperature. Beside him, Benton kicked a loose piece of shale, the faint clatter echoing too loudly in the otherwise muffled woods. They were deep in it now, past the last of the official markers, where the trees grew just a little too sparse, and the undergrowth had taken on an unsettling, almost luminous, pallor.

Storytelling and the Arts, Skills Development and Digital Transformation

AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting: Our incubator’s research delves into AI’s evolving role in creative development, using diverse story genres as case studies. For instance, in crafting Coming-of-Age narratives, Legal Thriller plots, and Satire, we examine how AI can contribute to character arc development, intricate plot construction, and nuanced comedic timing. We explore AI’s capacity to assist in building credible legal scenarios, establishing the emotional depth required for contemporary drama, and even conceptualizing the unique world-building challenges inherent in Post-Apocalyptic Survival stories, thereby enhancing overall storytelling and scriptwriting.

Talent Development and Training: Concurrently, our project focuses on the future of creative talent development and the essential skills professionals will need. Engaging with genres like Contemporary Drama and Post-Apocalyptic Survival through AI tools provides insights into evolving digital publishing and film production workflows. Our research highlights the increasing importance of digital literacy and the ability to effectively manage AI tools, empowering writers and creators to navigate complex narrative structures and accelerate their creative processes while maintaining artistic vision in a digitally transformed industry.

We’re excited to learn about these new technologies and how they can be applied to expand the boundaries of human storytelling. We encourage you to keep reading, keep imagining, and keep exploring the incredible potential that opens up when creativity meets technology.

About the Project

By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment. It is part of a creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. This project focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI for generating ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing AI and immersive technologies to inform future training curricula. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for northern innovation in Ontario.
