Why Climate Entrepreneurship is Canada’s Urgent Call

Canadian Innovation Week 2025

As Canada looks to the future, one truth becomes increasingly clear: addressing the climate crisis isn’t just an environmental imperative, it’s an economic and social opportunity. For this year’s Canadian Innovation Week, we spotlight climate entrepreneurship as an emerging field of study and practice – the dynamic force driving innovative solutions to our planet’s most pressing challenges.

Climate entrepreneurs are more than just business builders; they are agents of change, developing new ventures and integrating sustainable products and services across various sectors. Their objectives are clear: mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting societies to unavoidable climate impacts, and avoiding ecological overshoot by decoupling economic growth from resource consumption. From renewable energy startups and energy efficiency solutions to circular economy initiatives and sustainable agriculture, the approaches are diverse and impactful.

A look at last year’s Canadian Innovation Week activities

However, it’s important to understand climate entrepreneurship isn’t a standalone solution. As research highlights, technological fixes alone are insufficient; they must be supported by “social technologies” – fundamental shifts in behaviour, organizational structures, and societal norms. This is particularly true here in Canada, a nation grappling with unique climate impacts, especially in its vast northern and remote communities. Many regions, especially across the north face disproportionate effects from extreme weather, high energy costs, and digital infrastructure deficits, yet they also hold immense potential for driving solutions.

For Canada to truly innovate and lead in the global climate transition, we need to collectively incubate environments where climate entrepreneurship can thrive. This means supporting technological advancements while supporting social and ethical frameworks and capacities to ensure these innovations are equitable, community-led, and genuinely transformative.

It’s about building a resilient future, one innovative solution at a time.

Canadian Innovation Week 2025

Taking place from 26-30 May, Canadian Innovation Week brings together innovators, partners, and communities from across Canada to spotlight how bold ideas are making a real impact – from local projects to global breakthroughs.
