Scenes from a Story Interrupted
There is a distinct energy found in the incomplete. These unfinished tales are presented as pages torn from a book that hasn’t been fully printed yet. They offer moments of conflict and character development that hang in the balance, requiring the reader to embrace the mystery of the unsaid and supply the missing context through their own imagination.
This collection emerges from a program dedicated to exploring the intersection of human creativity and applied artificial intelligence. We are testing the boundaries of how digital tools can support the writing process, enhancing digital literacy skills and offering new methods for scriptwriting and storytelling.
Today’s assortment moves quickly between tonal extremes, featuring the biting wit of Dark Comedy, the adrenaline of Action-Adventure and Political Thrillers, and the bleak landscapes of Dystopian fiction. We also ground these flights of fancy with Young Adult Contemporary themes. This post features the collaborative and individual efforts of authors Jamie F. Bell and Eva Suluk.
We encourage you to read these segments with an active mind. Consider not just what is on the page, but where the trajectory of these interrupted scenes might lead.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories
Our latest anthology highlights the versatility of modern publishing by merging intense Political Thrillers and Action-Adventure with the nuanced tones of Dark Comedy and Young Adult Contemporary fiction. Focusing on themes of Post-Apocalyptic Survival and Espionage, these short stories serve as a testament to the power of creative technology in shaping the future of storytelling. Through this project, we foster digital literacy by experimenting with AI-assisted narrative, bringing together eclectic categories like Sports Fiction and Horror to create a compelling, forward-thinking reading experience.

Summer’s Sour Bounty
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Post-Apocalyptic Survival | Genre: Dark Comedy
The air shimmered, thick and hot, over the cracked tarmac. A perpetual summer haze blurred the distant skeletal remains of what used to be telephone poles, their wires long since snapped or scavenged. The scent of baked dust and something vaguely organic, perpetually rotting, clung to the back of Rowen’s throat. Flies, thick and buzzing, moved in lazy circles around puddles of stagnant water that held the oily sheen of decay. Everything felt like it was simmering, slowly cooking under the unrelenting glare of a sun that seemed entirely indifferent to the world it illuminated.

The Chill in the Recital Hall
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Horror | Genre: Dystopian
The remnants of a dream clung to me like frost, a jagged, troubling landscape that felt less like an invention of sleep and more like a premonition. The air in the room was a tangible thing, sharp and thin, pulling me back to the familiar ache of reality. It was another winter morning in a world that had forgotten the meaning of warmth.

The Stained Index Card
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Espionage / Spy Fiction | Genre: Action-Adventure
The public library was a tomb of dust and weak autumn light. Sunlight, the colour of pale tea, struggled through the tall, grimy windows, illuminating the slow, lazy drift of particles in the air. It smelled of decaying paper, floor polish, and the damp wool of someone’s coat. The only sounds were the soft rustle of turning pages and the distant, rhythmic thump of a librarian’s stamp, each one landing with an air of finality.

Winter’s Bitter Bargain
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Post-Apocalyptic | Genre: Political Thriller
The wind was a dull, persistent ache in the stone teeth of the mountains, a sound Briar had known all seventeen winters of her life. It sculpted the snowdrifts into phantom creatures against the high walls of The Hollow, this small community tucked into a forgotten crease of the world. Each gust rattled the heavy oak door of the Gathering Hall, a tremor that echoed the unease in her own chest. Inside, the air, though warmed by the central hearth, carried the faint, metallic scent of damp wool and simmering anxieties. Her breath feathered out, a visible ghost against the cold air, a testament to the persistent chill that seeped into everything, even the very bones of their collective hope.

The Last Service Station
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Sports Fiction | Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
The interior of a cramped team van smelling of damp gear and stale snacks, moving through a rainy landscape.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
