Why Choose Our Bearberry?

  • Support Our Mission: 100% of proceeds from these sales directly benefit our nonprofit arts and land-based arts programming. Your purchase helps fund creative initiatives, educational workshops, and environmental stewardship right here in Ontario. Every plant you buy helps us grow!
  • Freshness Guaranteed: Unlike stock that sits for extended periods, our Bearberry roots are freshly harvested on demand directly from our land lab in Ontario. This ensures maximum vitality and the best possible start for your garden.
  • Truly Native & Local: Our plants are sourced directly from their untouched, natural habitat within our own land lab in Northwestern Ontario. You’ll get authentic, hardy stock perfectly adapted to local conditions, ideal for native plant landscaping, rock gardens, and erosion control.
  • Sustainably Harvested: We prioritize the long-term health of our ample wild population. Our careful, sustainable harvesting methods ensure minimal impact, making your purchase an eco-conscious choice for biodiversity planting and eco-friendly gardening.
  • Evergreen Groundcover Essential: Bearberry is a superb choice for groundcover, forming beautiful, dense mats of evergreen leaves. It’s perfect for slopes, sunny areas, rock gardens, and naturalized landscapes where a low-growing, hardy solution is needed.
  • Low Maintenance & Hardy: Once established, this resilient perennial shrub is incredibly low-care. It thrives in challenging conditions and is a winter-hardy plant for Ontario gardens, requiring minimal attention while providing year-round interest.
  • Ecological Value & Edible Berries: Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Bearberry contributes to your local ecosystem. Its pinkish-white urn-shaped flowers provide early season nectar for pollinators, and its dull red edible berries offer a food source for wildlife. It’s a valuable addition for wildlife-friendly landscaping and enhancing backyard biodiversity.

Planting Your Bearberry

We offer bare-root Bearberry plants, ready for transplanting.

  • Ideal Conditions: Bearberry thrives in well-drained, sandy soils, exposed rocks, eskers, or river banks. It prefers full sun to partial sun and can tolerate drier conditions once established.
  • Planting Season: For optimal success, bare-root plants should be put in the ground in early spring (as soon as the ground thaws) or late fall (after foliage dies back and before hard frost).
  • Growth Habit: This prostrate, much-branched shrub forms sprawling mats, typically growing low to the ground and spreading to cover areas, making it an excellent naturalized groundcover.
