Sights and Sounds in Downtown Winnipeg
Walking through Winnipeg’s Chinatown, the Exchange District takes on a unique rhythm—one where history, architecture, and culture all flow together. At its heart stands the Dynasty Building, completed in 1987, which remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the neighbourhood. Its sweeping roofline and tiered structure recall traditional Chinese architecture, blending references to the Forbidden City with the bold gestures of Post-Modernist design. The result is a building that feels both rooted in tradition and alive in its contemporary setting.
We hung out here a lot for our online meetings during the pandemic, when we weren’t allowed to meet anywhere else. We fell in love with this space right away. Especially the little ponds.
What makes the area especially beautiful is how the Dynasty Building connects to its surroundings. Along its south side, a series of stepped seating areas and garden elements invite visitors to pause and spend time. The gardens themselves are serene, complete with ponds that reflect the sunlight and create a quiet place for reflection in the middle of the city. It’s not just an architectural site—it’s a place where people gather, relax, and enjoy the blend of natural and built environments.
Inside and around the building, life continues to hum with energy. Originally designed as a multi-use space, it still houses a mix of cultural spaces, businesses, and offices. But beyond its functional role, the Dynasty Building and the surrounding Chinatown gates are part of what makes exploring this corner of the Exchange District so memorable. The sights and sounds—the chatter of shops, the movement of traffic, and the stillness of the gardens—create a balance that makes this one of Winnipeg’s most distinctive and welcoming neighbourhoods.
