It's officially summer! And what better place to chill out and go through our project plans than with some time spent at The Forks!
At the heart of Winnipeg, where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, lies The Forks—a gathering place layered with history, culture, and community. For over 6,000 years, this confluence of waterways has been a meeting ground for Indigenous peoples, traders, settlers, and travelers. Today, it continues that tradition, transformed into a vibrant public space where old stories flow alongside new ideas, and the spirit of the rivers infuses every path, bridge, and open space.
When we bring artists, researchers, and collaborators to The Forks, we know we’re offering them a window into Winnipeg’s living heart. The market, the riverwalk, and the wide-open green spaces invite people to slow down and connect—not just with the city, but with one another. It’s where conversations stretch late into the evening, where art and research projects find unexpected inspiration, and where we’ve learned that creativity and community grow best when rooted in shared spaces.
Part of what makes The Forks special is how it balances history with possibility. The old rail yards have become cultural hubs; the waterfront, once a site of trade, is now a stage for festivals, music, and art. Whether skating down the frozen river in winter or watching the water catch the summer light, this place reminds us that time is not linear—it swirls and bends like the current. It’s both a refuge and a spark, a reminder that community-building is an ongoing tide, always shaped by those who gather here.
For us, The Forks isn’t just a destination—it’s an anchor. It’s where we meet, dream, and begin many of the collaborations that ripple outward across our work. Like the rivers that define it, The Forks connects people and ideas, carrying them further than they could travel alone.
