This week in Winnipeg, Jamie Bell and Evano Aggark, Jr. reunited to reflect on their shared roots in the Arviat Film Society, the community-led initiative that launched the now-celebrated Arviat Television station. With early support from Isuma TV’s Digital Indigenous Democracy Project, the Arviat Film Society became a trailblazer in Inuit-driven media, producing youth-led broadcasts and culturally grounded storytelling that inspired similar projects across the North.

Aggark, who currently serves as one of the charismatic hosts for Tunnganarniq Nunagijavut: Arviat, continues to amplify Inuit voices and perspectives through community television. Bell, now based in Manitoba, remains a strong advocate for Indigenous digital media and community arts programming. Their meeting in Winnipeg this week served as both a reunion and a reminder of the enduring impact of grassroots media on cultural sovereignty and youth empowerment.

Art Borups Corners is a dynamic participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. The program was founded in 2014, with its arts incubator established in 2021 and 2022 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect.
