Cultivating Saskatoon Berry Plants for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Northwestern Ontario

Our Saskatoon Berry Patch project in Northwestern Ontario is rooted in the principles of sustainable agriculture, food sovereignty, and traditional knowledge.

As a native, cold-hardy superfruit, the Saskatoon berry plant thrives in northern climates and plays a vital role in Indigenous food systems. By revitalizing abandoned patches and establishing new ones, we are supporting local food production, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting regenerative practices that restore both land and culture. Through hands-on education, youth engagement, and partnerships with local knowledge holders, this initiative strengthens community-based agriculture and improves food security in Northern communities. Saskatoon berries are not just a nutritious food—they represent a sustainable, climate-resilient crop well-suited to northern food systems.
