Mapping the Future: Why Strategic Planning is the Next Step for Northwestern Ontario Groups

The future of Northwestern Ontario depends on our ability to look past today and plan for tomorrow.

Move beyond daily survival and build a legacy for your community through professional organizational design.

The Vision for a Resilient North

We see a future where the small organizations of Northwestern Ontario are not just surviving, but setting the standard for regional excellence. From the lakefront offices in Kenora to the community hubs in Thunder Bay and Dryden, our region is powered by people with immense vision. However, we often see these same leaders trapped in a cycle of immediate needs, reacting to the latest administrative hurdle or funding shift. To break this cycle, your organization requires a clear map. We offer professional strategic planning services to help you move from a reactive state to a proactive one.

In Northwestern Ontario, our distance from major urban centres is often seen as a barrier. We view it as an opportunity for unique, localized leadership. Whether you are managing a small arts group in Sioux Lookout or a community program in Fort Frances, your work is the foundation of our social fabric. But a foundation without a blueprint is difficult to maintain. By engaging in a formal process, you are deciding that the future of your organization is too important to leave to chance. We assist you in building that blueprint, ensuring your mission remains stable and effective for the next decade.

Defining Your Trajectory through Strategic Planning

Many boards and community groups believe that a plan is a static document that sits on a shelf. This is an old way of thinking that we are here to change. True strategic planning is the active process of defining who you serve, how you serve them, and what resources you need to remain sustainable. It is about making hard choices today so that your tomorrow is secure. We work with your leadership to identify the specific goals that will move your organization forward, rather than just keeping it afloat.

From Volunteers to Visionaries

Boards in our region are often made up of dedicated volunteers who are also your neighbours. These individuals bring passion, but they often lack the technical tools to manage long-term organizational growth. Our service focuses on equipping these boards with a clear sense of purpose. We facilitate sessions that clear the air, align your team on a single path, and define clear roles for everyone involved. When a board knows exactly where it is going, it can lead with confidence. This clarity is essential for attracting new members and keeping current ones engaged. We help you turn your volunteer board into a professional leadership team that is ready for the future.

Building a Sustainable Architecture for the North

Sustainability is not just about having money in the bank; it is about having a system that generates results year after year. In places like Red Lake and Atikokan, the local economy and population can shift. A rigid organization will break under these pressures, but a strategically planned one will adapt. We help you look at your current programs and ask the difficult questions: Are we meeting the current needs of our community? Do we have the right partnerships to grow? What does success look like five years from now?

Local Context as a Strength

Our approach to strategic planning is grounded in the reality of Northwestern Ontario. We do not use generic models designed for cities in the south. We understand that transportation in Marathon is different than in Toronto. We know that community connections in our northern towns are our greatest asset. Our process integrates these local realities into your plan, turning your geographic context into a competitive advantage. We help you identify potential partners within the region—other non-profits, municipal offices, and local businesses—to create a network of support that is uniquely northern.

The Future is Built by Design

We are a social enterprise that operates with the same grit and determination as the groups we serve. We are not interested in providing a report that gathers dust. We want to see your organization thrive. When you partner with us for your planning needs, you are gaining a team that is invested in the health of our entire region. We provide the tools, the professional facilitation, and the structural design your organization needs to become a permanent fixture in your community.

Stop reacting to the present and start designing the future. We invite you to reach out to us for a consultation to discuss your specific needs. Whether you are a brand new community program or an established organization looking for a refresh, we are here to assist. Let us work together to build a resilient, innovative, and bold future for Northwestern Ontario. Your mission deserves a plan that is as ambitious as your vision. Contact us today to begin the process of professionalizing your trajectory.

The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect. Join us at the intersection of artistry, technology, culture and community—where every moment is a new opportunity to create.

April 1: Apply for the Under $100 Art Show in Winnipeg

Art Borups Corners 23 Mar 2026
In the 2026 Spring Arts Exhibition in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario, Inuit artist and filmmaker Eva Suluk showcases her acclaimed work from Isuma TV’s Inuit Makers series. Her eight-part documentary films capture traditional land-based practices, including caribou harvesting, butchering, and meat preservation, highlighting the intergenerational transfer of Inuit knowledge, skills, and storytelling. Shot in a meditative “Slow TV” style, Eva’s films provide an immersive glimpse into Inuit culture, northern Canadian traditions, and Indigenous heritage. Visitors can explore her work alongside visual art, photography, and interactive exhibits, connecting local audiences with northern Indigenous perspectives. Watch the full series on Isuma TV and experience the continuity of Inuit land-based practices and cultural storytelling.

This year’s Spring Arts Exhibition at the Dyment Recreation Hall in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario is proud to spotlight the powerful work of local Borups Corners artist Leanne Nicholson. Deeply rooted in the landscapes of northwestern Ontario, Leanne’s striking mixed-media practice—ranging from intricately painted skulls and antlers to evocative wildlife imagery—brings the spirit of the land into the space in a way that is both raw and deeply moving. We are excited to welcome her work into this year’s exhibition and to share her unique voice, shaped by nature, resilience, and lived experience, with the community.

This beautiful, but heavily worn, Volvo P1800 sports coupe—famous for its elegant design and starring role in The Saint—now sits quietly, its original red paint fading to purple. The distinct curves and chrome details are still visible beneath the rust, suggesting a glamorous life that ended here among the trees.
