Advancing capacity building in northwestern ontario through local film and television production training.
Do you actually think you need to move to a concrete jungle to build a film career? The industry is literally begging for crews who can handle the Canadian Shield.
There is a massive shift happening in how stories are told. People are over the green-screened, sterile environments of big-budget studios. They want place-based storytelling. They want the raw, unfiltered landscape of Northern Ontario. But here is the problem: we keep letting production companies bring their own crews from the south because we haven’t built our own local workforce yet. That ends now. Capacity building in northwestern ontario means training our own technical production experts right here at home.
If you are an emerging creator, your biggest advantage is your familiarity with the terrain. You know how the light hits the pines at 5:00 AM. You know how to navigate a backroad that isn’t on Google Maps. That is specialized knowledge that a city crew doesn’t have. By diving into targeted training programs for film and television, you are making yourself indispensable. We are talking about high-paying, sustainable careers that allow you to stay in your community while working on projects that have a global reach.
We need to stop thinking of film as an ‘outsider’ industry. It is ours for the taking. When we foster digital media skills and technical production talent within our small towns, we create a self-sustaining ecosystem. We don’t just host the films; we write them, shoot them, and edit them.
Collaboration is the secret sauce here. Connect with local festivals. Talk to the provincial networks that are looking to diversify their talent pools. The funding is there, but it’s waiting for people who have the skills to back it up. Don’t be the person who missed the wave because they were too busy wishing they were somewhere else. The North is the most exciting set in the country right now. Own it.
