northwestern ontario arts

Northwestern Ontario Arts highlights the creative activity taking place across the region, from small communities like Borups Corners and Dyment to towns such as Dryden. At the centre of this work is Art Borups Corners, a flagship initiative that develops interdisciplinary projects, digital arts, and community-based programs engaging artists, youth, and residents. Supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, Northwestern Ontario Arts shows how rural and northern creativity strengthens local identity, builds cultural capacity, and contributes to the province’s broader arts community. Through collaboration, innovation, and storytelling, Art Borups Corners demonstrates the impact and reach of arts in Northwestern Ontario.

What if your greatest strength felt like your biggest secret? Published by Art Borups Corners and The Arts Incubator Winnipeg, Lena's Strong Game introduces Lena, a soccer star with powerful legs that propel her across the field. But despite her talent, Lena feels deeply self-conscious about her strong body, hiding her legs and holding back her true potential. She longs for thin legs like the other girls, letting shyness dim her otherwise bright game.

Published by the Arts Incubator Winnipeg, Alex's True Goal invites readers into the world of a young soccer star grappling with a big decision. Alex is the fastest player on the Green Dragons, the team's shining hope for the championship. The cheers are deafening, his dad is proud, and everyone in town expects him to win. But beneath the roar of the crowd, Alex feels a quiet unease, a heavy weight that even scoring goals can't lift. His real joy lies in the quiet corners of the Sunny Paws Animal Shelter, a secret world of soft purrs and gentle yips where he finds peace and purpose. As the championship approaches, Alex faces an impossible choice: uphold everyone's expectations, or follow the quiet call of his own heart? Can he find the courage to define happiness on his own terms and prove that true victory isn't always found on the field?

ART BORUPS CORNERS SOCIETY

Art Borups Corners is a non-profit arts incubator based in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario. We bring artists, youth, and local residents together through hands-on creative projects, workshops, and storytelling rooted in everyday life in the North. Our focus is on making space for people to try things, share skills, and build confidence through art that grows out of where they live.

We’re also a place for testing ideas and working across different ways of making — from land-based practice to digital work and everything in between. Much of what we do happens through partnerships and shared projects, connecting local creative work with wider conversations while keeping things grounded, practical, and community-led.
