Shadows in the Stadium
The pieces collected here are snapshots of larger lives, frozen in time. They are unfinished tales that present a situation—a fear realized, a game won, a quiet conversation—without the context of a beginning or an end. This ambiguity turns the reading experience into a puzzle, where the atmosphere and character dynamics suggest a trajectory that is never fully confirmed.
As an initiative within applied artificial intelligence research, this project examines the collaborative potential between human writers and digital systems. It highlights how technology can assist in generating initial concepts and scriptwriting structures, fostering a deeper understanding of digital literacy in the arts.
The genres in this post vary significantly, shifting from the unsettling tension of Horror to the grounded realism of Slice of Life and Sports Fiction. The writing comes from Jamie F. Bell and Jamie Bell, whose work anchors these diverse scenarios.
Take a moment to read through these excerpts and consider where the characters might go next. These stories are yours to finish, offering a starting point for your own creative interpretation.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories
Delving into the visceral world of horror and the grounded nature of gritty realism, this entry highlights the diversity found in contemporary fiction and sports narratives. Whether exploring allegorical legal thrillers or domestic slice of life dramas, our platform remains at the forefront of the publishing evolution. We are committed to fostering digital literacy by utilizing creative technology to craft compelling short stories, ultimately investigating the potential of AI-assisted narrative to transform how we experience storytelling.

The Orange Peel Grimace
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Horror | Genre: Horror
The crisp bite of late autumn clung to everything, a preamble to winter’s harsher embrace. Fallen leaves, ochre and burnt umber, whispered across the deserted suburban street, disturbed only by the keen wind. A sense of wrongness, subtle yet profound, began to settle over the quiet afternoon, preceding the grotesque arrival.

The Crimson Hummingbird
Author: Jamie Bell | Category: Allegorical | Genre: Slice of Life
The streetlights, haloed by the season’s first truly biting fog, cast long, wavering shadows that danced like restless spirits. A chill, damp and smelling of wet leaves and distant woodsmoke, seeped into the city’s bones, clinging to brick and pavement. It was that liminal stretch of autumn, when the world felt poised between the last gasp of warmth and the unforgiving embrace of winter. Down a quiet, residential stretch, where the sound of traffic was a dull thrum, a solitary convenience store blinked its tired neon into the gathering gloom, a beacon of flickering promise and unseen possibility.

The Asphalt Debt
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Gritty Realism | Genre: Sports Fiction
The outdoor basketball court, baking under the relentless Winnipeg summer sun, is a crucible of desperation. Sweat drips, sneakers squeak against faded asphalt, and every breath is a ragged gasp. The air crackles with the raw tension of a game teetering on the edge, the distant drone of city traffic a forgotten backdrop to the unfolding drama.

A December’s Chill
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Domestic Thriller | Genre: Contemporary Fiction
The city had shed its autumn cloak abruptly, trading crisp leaves for a sharp, biting cold that promised snow. Christmas lights, premature in their glow, had begun to dot the avenues, casting a pale, electric cheer against the deepening twilight. The air itself seemed to hum with an unspoken tension, a mix of holiday rush and the inevitable quietude of Canadian winter.

Stained Glass, Stained Hands
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Legal Thriller | Genre: Horror
The air in the Concordia Gallery, once thick with the hushed reverence for art and the scent of expensive canapés, now reeked of something metallic and stale. Dust motes, disturbed by frantic movement, danced in the weak afternoon light filtering through the massive skylights. What was meant to be a quiet viewing had devolved into a desperate scramble, the polished marble floors slick with an ominous, dark sheen. Alarms, long since blaring, were now just another layer of the suffocating chaos, an insistent, maddening shriek that resonated through the grand hall, reflecting off the muted, staring faces of forgotten portraits.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
