The Secret Life of Real Connections

Digital connection is a diet version of the real thing; it leaves you nutritionally empty.

The Secret Life of Real Connections

You need to Disconnect to build relationships that actually have depth.

We have never been more ‘connected,’ yet we have never been more lonely. Having five hundred followers who view your Stories is not the same thing as having a friend who knows your coffee order and what you are stressed about. Digital connection is a diet version of the real thing. It gives you a little hit of dopamine, but it leaves you nutritionally empty. If you want real intimacy, you have to get offline.

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you sit across from someone and leave the phones face down on the table. You start to pick up on body language, tone of voice, and the subtle energy between you. You have the space to go deep into a conversation without being interrupted by a notification about someone’s brunch. This is where real trust and memories are built.

Most of our ‘socializing’ online is just us projecting a version of ourselves. We wait for the ‘like’ to feel seen. But being truly seen means being known in your messiness, your humor, and your physical presence. It means showing up for people when it is not convenient or ‘aesthetic.’ It means making eye contact and actually listening, not just waiting for your turn to speak or your phone to buzz.

This week, challenge your inner circle to a phone-free dinner. See how the energy changes. You might find that the first ten minutes are a bit awkward, but then the laughter gets louder and the stories get better. You will leave feeling actually full—not just in your stomach, but in your soul. That is what we are all actually craving. Not more followers, but more depth.

Don’t let your relationships become just a series of blue bubbles on a screen. Go see your people. Hug them. Experience the world with them. Those are the things you will remember in ten years. Nobody ever looks back on their life and wishes they spent more time in the DMs. They wish they spent more time with the people they love. Go be with them.

The Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project (MINIAP) is a community-driven research and policy initiative examining the environmental, social, cultural, economic, and long-term safety impacts of the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel in Melgund, Ontario. Aligned with the federal impact assessment process led by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and focused on the proposal advanced by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, this integrated project analyzes groundwater protection, nuclear waste storage safety, Indigenous rights and treaty interests, environmental monitoring, long-term radioactive waste containment, emergency preparedness, regulatory oversight, community health, regional economic impacts, and intergenerational stewardship. Designed to enhance public participation, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making, the Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment Project provides accessible analysis, technical review, and community engagement resources to support informed input into Canada’s nuclear waste management strategy and the federal impact assessment process.
