Impact Assessment process for controversial nuclear waste facility launched on July 3, 2026

The federal review process for the proposed Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s used nuclear fuel project has officially entered a new phase.

On July 3, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) announced it has commenced an impact assessment under the Impact Assessment Act for the project. Working in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, the agency has issued a series of documents to guide both the proponent’s preparation of an Impact Statement and the integrated assessment process.

The documents include the Integrated Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines (Integrated Guidelines), Public Participation Plan, Indigenous Engagement and Partnership Plan, Cooperation Plan, and Permitting Plan. Together, they outline how the assessment will be conducted and how the public, Indigenous communities, regulators, and other participants will be involved as the review moves forward.

More information about the impact assessment is available through the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
