Local Artist Leads Community Conversation on Grief, Memory and Healing Through Art

MELGUND TOWNSHIP, Ont. — Community members gathered at the Dyment Recreation Hall on Sunday afternoon for the June instalment of the Summer Arts Speaker Series, featuring local Borups Corners artist and social worker Leanne Nicholson.

The session, titled After Leah: Grief, Memory and Healing Through Art, explored the emotional, physical and social dimensions of grief through personal reflection, discussion and artistic practice. Drawing on her own experiences with the loss of her late sister Leah, Nicholson spoke about the ways grief reshapes daily life, relationships and creative expression, emphasizing that healing is often a lifelong and non-linear process.

Participants reflected on different forms of grief, including sudden loss, anticipated loss and collective experiences of mourning. The discussion also examined how grief can affect the body and mind, often surfacing in unexpected ways long after a loss has occurred.

Throughout the afternoon, Nicholson highlighted the role of art as a means of expression when words are difficult to find. She described creative practice as a way of carrying memory, processing experience and maintaining connection to people and places that remain significant after loss.

The event provided space for personal reflection and community dialogue, with attendees sharing stories and perspectives in a respectful and supportive setting. Organizers said the session reflected the speaker series’ commitment to creating opportunities for meaningful conversations around topics that affect rural communities.

Nicholson is a local Borups Corners artist and social worker whose creative practice incorporates wildlife imagery and natural materials such as antlers, bones and skulls gathered from the forest. Influenced by a lifelong connection to the land, her work explores themes of memory, resilience and continuity while drawing on both artistic and community-based approaches to healing and reflection.

Organizers noted that the discussion demonstrated the important role that arts and cultural programming can play in fostering connection, reflection and community well-being.

The June speaker series was hosted by the Art Borups Corners Society, a local arts non-profit organization that works to strengthen creative opportunities, cultural programming and community engagement across the region.
