One powerful method that continues to gain traction with Art Borups Corners is the use of participatory and arts-based research. Harnessing the creative potential of community members, this approach not only promotes artistic expression but also serves as a catalyst for social change. This week we’re exploring the transformative impact of arts-based research and how it empowers communities to thrive.

Harnessing Creativity: Unleashing Community Potential

Creativity is more than just an individual talent; it is a shared resource that can unify and uplift entire communities. When community members come together to engage in creative activities, they break down barriers, build connections, and unlock collective potential. Arts-based research taps into this synergy, encouraging participants to express their experiences, hopes, and challenges through various art forms, such as painting, music, dance, and theatre.

One compelling example of this is Art Borups Corners “Youth Food Development Project.” Through this initiative, urban and newly-urban Inuit, First Nations and Metis youth explore entrepreneurship opportunities in the food sector while honing their skills in arts, entrepreneurship, and digital media literacy. In the project, youth and community members design, market, and sell a line of homemade jams for the fall and holiday seasons. Participants delve into all aspects of product development, from conceptualizing fruit and berry combinations to designing compelling labels. This collective effort fosters local pride, restores cultural practices, and strengthens the community’s economic and social fabric.

For instance, Art Borups Corners’ “Growing from the Ground Up in Manitoba” project, supported by artsincubator.ca, engages community members in workshops and digital media projects that address local issues like food insecurity and climate change. The Arts Incubator - Winnipeg is a participatory arts collective and living lab, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It's a space where innovation and creativity thrive. It's latest iteration was launched in 2021 with funding and support from the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Greenhouse. Today, working with students and faculty from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, we fuse traditional and participatory media arts with artificial intelligence, music, storytelling and community-driven, land-based artist residencies to cultivate new voices and bold ideas. Whether through collaborative projects or immersive experiences, our small but vibrant community supports creators to explore, experiment, and connect.
