Watching the Arctic Sun Finally Stick Around
If you’ve never spent a winter on the Hudson Bay coast, it’s hard to describe the vibe when the light finally starts coming back.
For months, it feels like you’re living in a monochrome movie where the sun just barely peeks over the horizon before giving up and heading home. But right now on the edge of the Hudson Bay Coast, we’re in that wild transition phase where the days aren’t just getting longer—they’re sprinting. We’re starting to gain minutes of daylight every single day, which doesn’t sound like much until you realize that by next week, the world will look completely different than it did a few days ago.
Everything in town starts to shift when the light sticks around.
People are out on their machines longer, and there’s this collective shot of adrenaline in the community because we know the “Big Dark” is officially over. We’re headed toward the time of year where the sun barely sleeps at all, but for now, everyone is just soaking up those extra minutes.
It’s the best kind of exhaustion—coming home from a long day out on the land and realizing it’s still light enough to see the tracks behind you.
