Take part in Manitoba Talks!
A province-wide initiative encouraging Manitobans to connect across differing viewpoints
What is Manitoba Talks?
Manitoba Talks is a province-wide public engagement initiative led by CBC Manitoba. The program brings Manitobans together for one-on-one conversations with people whose opinions and perspectives differ from their own. Rather than debating or persuading, the focus is on listening, understanding, and exchanging ideas respectfully.
How the Program Works
Participants begin by completing a short questionnaire with yes-or-no questions on current social and political issues. An algorithm then pairs individuals with someone whose responses contrast most strongly with their own. Once matched, participants can coordinate either a virtual conversation or an in-person meeting in a public setting. This structured approach ensures each conversation is intentional, safe, and grounded in mutual respect.

A Global Model in Manitoba
Manitoba Talks is based on the internationally recognized program My Country Talks, created by ZEIT Online in 2017. The model has been implemented in over 100 countries, with more than 200,000 participants taking part in meaningful cross-perspective dialogues. This initiative marks the first time the program has been brought to Canada.
Who Can Participate
The program is open to all Manitobans. By participating, individuals have the opportunity to step outside their usual circles, encounter new perspectives, and gain insights that may inform their understanding of social, cultural, and political issues in their community. Creative communities, including arts and cultural organizations, are especially encouraged to join and share the initiative with their networks.
Virtual or In-Person Conversations
Participants can choose to meet virtually or in a public location of their choice. CBC Manitoba also provides conversation space at FortWhyte Alive for those who prefer a hosted environment. Both options allow for safe, structured, and meaningful dialogue.
Strengthening Civic Understanding
By promoting civil discourse, Manitoba Talks encourages empathy, reduces polarization, and fosters stronger communities. Engaging in these respectful conversations helps participants understand differing viewpoints, ultimately contributing to healthier public dialogue across Manitoba.
