Northern Ontario Arts

The arts in Northern Ontario celebrate the creativity, heritage, and innovation of communities across the region, from Borups Corners and Dyment to Dryden and beyond. Central to this cultural landscape is Art Borups Corners, which leads interdisciplinary, digital, and community-based arts initiatives that engage local artists, youth, and residents. Supported by the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, the arts in Northern Ontario highlight how rural and northern creativity contributes to broader provincial and national cultural identity. Through workshops, exhibitions, and collaborative projects, these initiatives foster connection, strengthen community capacity, and showcase the North as a vibrant hub for artistic excellence.

Interdisciplinary capacity is the new creative skill—artists learning systems, not just mediums, through hands-on creation.

The interdisciplinary arts program provides young writers and community members with practical arts-focused skill development, helping them turn personal experiences into resonant stories that connect with a wider audience. A new short story, "Mona's Secret Songs" by young Inuk author Tony Eetak, is now available, offering young readers a thoughtful look at kindness and standing up for others in the digital age. The story introduces Mona, a student who finds herself in a tricky situation when her friends use a secret music app to create a mean playlist targeting a classmate. Instead of confronting them directly, Mona quietly uses the same app to add songs of encouragement, showing a different path.

Nuclear Waste Management

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is inviting residents and land users in the area of Canada's proposed Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel to participate in a Diet and Land-Use Survey. The information collected will help inform local perspectives as the project moves through the federal regulatory process.

The survey can be completed online or through an in-person interview at the Ignace Learn More Centre. It is open until September 7, 2026, and participants will have the opportunity to enter a draw to win one of twenty C$125 gift cards redeemable at local businesses.

ART BORUPS CORNERS SOCIETY

Art Borups Corners is a non-profit arts incubator based in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario. We bring artists, youth, and local residents together through hands-on creative projects, workshops, and storytelling rooted in everyday life in the North. Our focus is on making space for people to try things, share skills, and build confidence through art that grows out of where they live.

We’re also a place for testing ideas and working across different ways of making — from land-based practice to digital work and everything in between. Much of what we do happens through partnerships and shared projects, connecting local creative work with wider conversations while keeping things grounded, practical, and community-led.
