Humor in the Darkness
These narratives eschew the traditional structure of beginning, middle, and end. Instead, they are presented as unfinished tales, incomplete narrative fragments that drop the reader into a specific emotional frequency. They are exercises in tone and voice, leaving the plot mechanics largely to the inference of the audience.
This collection is an experimental program at the intersection of human creativity, interdisciplinary arts, and applied artificial intelligence research. It creates a framework to explore how digital tools can act as a partner in the writing process. The project aims to shape new forms of storytelling and scriptwriting and to enhance digital literacy skills and workflows.
The genres explored in this post include the nuance of Literary Fiction and the biting wit of Dark Comedy. These are set against the backdrop of Dystopian Thriller themes, finding irony and humanity even in bleak circumstances. The stories are crafted by Jamie F. Bell and Eva Suluk, who explore the resilience of the human spirit through a dark lens.
Engage with these fragments and find the laughter in the dark. We invite you to take these incomplete scenes and construct the rest of the narrative, deciding whether the story ends in tragedy or farce.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories
This exploration of Literary Fiction ranges from the tension of a Political Thriller and Dystopian Thriller to the levity of Cozy Mystery and Dark Comedy. We are dedicated to the future of publishing, using creative technology to understand how Surreal and Absurdist elements interact with Crime Noir and Fantasy. Through our focus on AI-assisted narrative and digital literacy, we present short stories that offer profound insights into the complexity of contemporary storytelling.

A Canvas of Ice and Grime
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Crime Noir | Genre: Literary Fiction
The wind, a cutting thing, swept down Portage Avenue, carrying the scent of exhaust and thawing salt. Every lamppost cast a distorted, elongated shadow that danced over the dirty snow. The city hummed, a low, metallic thrum beneath the howl of the January gale, forcing Cassian deeper into the threadbare wool of his coat, his hands shoved into pockets that felt too thin.

The Glazed Horizon
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Mystery | Genre: Dark Comedy
The wind was a blunt instrument, pummeling the vast, open fields surrounding the frozen lake. It whipped the loose snow into a frenzy, sculpting phantom dunes that shifted with every passing gust. Under a stark, indifferent moon, the landscape stretched, unbroken save for the skeletal trees huddled at the distant forest’s edge. It was the kind of cold that stole the breath right out of your lungs, leaving an ache behind your teeth. This was not a night for wandering, yet here they were.

Canvas and Steel
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Surreal / Absurdist | Genre: Dystopian Thriller
The city bleeds into a frigid, grey winter morning, the omnipresent chill and the silent threat of Enforcer patrols shaping every step. A courier, Alex, attempts to blend into the urban grime, his latest package a silent, heavy burden.

A Bitter Thaw
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Cozy Mystery | Genre: Contemporary Fiction
The persistent April rain, a dull grey curtain against the window, seemed to mirror the grey landscape inside. Dust motes, usually vibrant in the infrequent sun, lay dormant on the polished surfaces. The apartment felt too still, too heavy, burdened by unspoken recollections and the quiet hum of an old refrigerator in the kitchen.

The Glass Orchid’s Promise
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Political Thriller | Genre: Fantasy
The oppressive summer sun beat down on the Glassrock Steppe, turning the air into a shimmering, distorted canvas. Orrin, barely nine cycles old, felt the unique, metallic tang of the Glassrock in his nostrils, a scent as ancient as Elder Cygnus’s own weary bones. He clutched the worn leather pouch, its contents pressing a familiar anxiety against his small frame, knowing the honour of this task was matched only by its quiet danger.
About the Project
By design, these stories have no beginning and no end. Many stories are fictional, but many others are not. They are snapshots from worlds that never fully exist, inviting you to imagine what comes before and what happens next. We had fun exploring this project, and hope you will too.
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection is part of an experimental, creative arts and research program by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. Each chapter is an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment focused on two key areas: AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, where researchers explore using AI to generate story ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs to enhance creative development; and Talent Development and Training, where the project studies the necessary skills for creative professionals to manage AI and immersive technologies in production, helping to inform future training curricula. The project was made possible with funding and support from the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation research and innovation in Ontario.
